Question about part time positions

How do part time positions work, are they usually partial days, 5 days a week, or 2-4 full days a week?

(such as special ed, reading, and any other areas that may have part time positions).

Re: Question about part time positions

It;s usually 2 or 3 classes a day instead of 5 depending on the district. We have part time french teacher that comes in for 2 classes, so she comes in 5th period.

Re: Question about part time positions

is this common in elementary grades?

Ive heard that there are a few special ed p/t positions in east northport (taken ones, not available ones Chat Icon)

so Ive been wondering what other areas this may be in. reading teachers?

and languages would be middle or high school im sure. darn but Id hate to get certified in something else only to not find a job. The head of a language dept asked me to see her for a job last year, because Im fluent in Italian and Spanish, but my certif is in Elem Ed.

SURE id take her word for it, if she guaranteed me that spot.

Are language teaching positions in demand?

Im trying to weigh all my options since it seems Elem ed positions are so few and there are SO many resumes out there already. and my languages is one thing that helps me market myself.

languages are definitely into demand!!

a few of the language teachers in my middle school work part time schedules (.4 or .6) and then go to the HS for the rest of the day.

Anna language teachers are so in demand. We have had opening every year for the past 11 years that I have been with my district. Infact one year we had a teacher leave midyear and we couldn't find anyone so we had to hire from outside the country to get someone to do it. They even went as far as to get her emergency cert for the rest of the year since she wasn't even certified.

Re: Question about part time positions

I was parttime for a couple of weeks in the beginning of my first year - I went to school the whole day but worked less periods - I also had the opportunity to do subbing when needed, which was extra $$

Foreign language teachers are definitely in demand - two years we had a leave replacement that literally could not get filled and a perm sub cert in ss ended up coverin the class bc they were soooo desperate

Re: Question about part time positions

ok now I have more questions since you all got my engines running Chat Icon

if it was part time, do I have to be in school for the whole day, but just teach those periods? (since one of you just stated that you did that).

also- are any teaching positions offered where the district will pay for the certification? Like i said, I cant get 5 certifications and then roll the dice and see which one I get a job in.

Is it unheard of that districts pay for certifications? I wonder how many credits? Chat Icon Chat Icon (for language).

Re: Question about part time positions

The few part-time positions at my school (elem) are Reading Recovery, SIR, speech/language, and probably a few others I don't even realize. These teachers all have varying degrees of "part-timeness." I know the RR teachers teach in the mornings, 5 days a week (I believe their hours are something like 9-12). The SIR teachers are 3 full days a week.

Basically, I think it depends on the district and what you do. IMO, a degree/certification in reading would probably be most helpful in obtaining a part-time position.

Re: Question about part time positions

In my district, part-time teachers only stay for the periods they teach (I'm in a 7-12 building).

I was a part-time teacher for my first job, but it was supplimented with a part-time academic intervention job, so I was a full-time employee and I stayed all day long, but half of my salary was one rate, and half was another.

Re: Question about part time positions

I think it's unheard of for a LI district to pay for certification.
