Dog and Worms
We just noticed that our dog has worms. We've only had him for a few weeks- he was a stray.
I'd made a vet appt. for him anyway, for a checkup, but they could not get us in till Thurs. In the meantime, are there OTC things I can give him to begin getting rid of them? I feel so bad.

Re: Dog and Worms
We also took in a stray that was throwing up for weeks -I took him to the vet 4 times!!
well 2 weeks ago he threw up a worm - I took him straight to the vet and he was put on meds...and now is SOOO much better.
I don't believe there is anything over the counter for worms. The meds we gave him were for three days - then repeated for three days three weeks later (that is the life cycle of the worm.)
I do want to add my 2cents though about your vet....you should find one that will take the dog right away when he is sick!!

Re: Dog and Worms
i wouldn't want to wait either - but if you have to wait, can you go to PetCo or somewhere like that? I think I have seen OTC stuff.

Re: Dog and Worms
there's an emergency vet in Commack. Also, Fort Hill in Huntington has great hours and will always squeeze you in if you are having a problem with your doggie. I wouldn't give him anything over the counter because you don't know what kind of parasite it is and some meds may cause more problems. FM if you need any other info. Also, I am pretty sure there's an emergency vet in Bethpage.

Re: Dog and Worms
Your vet does not sound very accomodating -- making you wait with a sick dog. I would take puppy elsewhere.

Re: Dog and Worms
I would go somewhere else. How did you notice it had worms? If it is that serious that they are in the poop, you had better go right away but all puppies have worms. Thats what makes puppy breath...

Re: Dog and Worms
Thanks everyone-
DH noticed the worms, just once. We haven't seen them again. When I made the initial call to the vet, we had not noticed the worms at that point. We live in the boonies now and I just picked the vet who was near us. DH is going to take him tomorrow, they will fit him in.
