Life & Infertility
Hey ladies..I figured you guys would best understand. I have currently gone through 3 miscarriages in 9 months and DH and I are taking a little break to recoup. We are also seeing a specialist who is running a zillion tests so we are still looking forward as far as that. My question is I have been at my job for 8 years and i love all the people but for the past few years I have been at the poing where I am not enjoying what i do anymore but of course it is comfortable. I have had other job offers in the last year but stayed because we wanted to start a family, I get maternity leave and I thought it made more sense. Of course now we are learning you just can't plan =). On top fo that I just found out our funding is up next year so I only have a year left here. I applied this weekend on a whim for a job i was excited about and they called for an interview. My question is do you guys think it is foolish to leave a place you are comfortabel with while going through infertility. In one way I think it is since i have a super flexibel schedule and can leave as i need for tests etc. ...my boss already knows everything i am going through and is awesome...the other side is i am scared to keep putting all my eggs in the baby basket..what if it takes alot longer and a year form now we are not pregnant and i am out of a job.....should i be following through on life as is..I know no one has the answers but i just thought you guys might have some insight that others can't quite understand..TIA!!

Re: Life & Infertility
Are you certain that your job will run out of funding in a year anyway? If so, there is a chance that your job may end at a time when it will be very difficult for you anyway, so you may just want to do what seems best for right now (not sure if that is the best advice but I think that is what I'd do). The uncertainty about the future was one of the most difficult parts of my having a long TTC period.
It may be tough to find a new job if you are pregnant or have a newborn. I know how difficult these decisions are. I was TTC for a long time and toward the end I was unsure about taking on certain work projects. As it is, I took on a big project that I may have to back out of. It was the opportunity of a lifetime but the timing was terrible for me. Still, I am glad that I did not put my life on hold and I got a chance to try to make the project work.

Re: Life & Infertility
after being on this journey I have stopped planning my life around it. Do what fels right, and if you KNOW the job will be ending then you are better off preparing now.

Re: Life & Infertility
Thanks ladies..sometimes it is hard to see outside of your own situation. I am going to go on the interview and take it from there.

Re: Life & Infertility
I actually went through a similiar situation last year and I decided to stay at my job. I think it's really your personal decision but for me I felt like I had already proved myself at my current job and they knew how I performed. Therefore, the fact that when you go through infertility you will go to the dr's often and sometimes the meds they put you on don't make you feel good, you really want to be in a place that will completely understand the situation. If you decide to go I would be completely upfront with the new company. I don't mean tell them you are planning because that is no ones business but let them know that you are going through a medical situation that requires you to go to dr's appts during the day or early morning.

Re: Life & Infertility
I would not hold back on the new job...I also am not sure I would tell them right away about needing to go to Drs., etc. It might be better if you have a month or so to prove yourself and then you can let them know that you may need to come in late here and there. My brother just went through this with his condition. He went on a few interviews and they were going to hire him but when he told them he had Marfan's and needed a few surgeries they told him to come back when he was through with the surgeries. He then took a job without telling them and when he had to go for some presurgical testing after a month of employment, he explained his situation and they told him to take whatever time he needed. They know he is an excellent worker at this point so are willing to make some accomodations for him.

Re: Life & Infertility
I would go on the interview especially since your job is ending in a year. Hopefully this new job will have great benefits and you will have maternity leave when the time comes. Good luck to you.

Re: Life & Infertility
I would definitely interview. I'm in sort of the same situation as you. I definitely think its a better situation for you to have a steady job that maybe you'll miss out on a few weeks salary for maternity leave than to be out of a job altogether. HTH!
Good luck in whatever you choose!

Re: Life & Infertility
the only other complication and of course you really can't plan is that my current job as well as this interview are both in the city..we were thinking once we had a baby one of us would need to not be commuting which would make more sense to be me...so i would possibly be leaving the job and looking for something local after anyway..part time etc..so who knows..again it could be a long time before that happens.. i am going to go on the interview regardless and see what happnes next..i am also tkaing classes part time for teaching so lots of different things going on..thanks again for your input

Re: Life & Infertility
I have been at three different jobs since I started my IVF Journey (five years ago) and each job was very understanding and never gave me any problems. I postponed trying at my first job until I was there for a year thinking as soon as I started I would be pregnant.....well, its five years later and still no baby. I would suggest do whatever you feel is best for you and your husband. Most jobs are good about it - at least mine were and still are.

Re: Life & Infertility
I would say to interview. I think that if a great opportunity arises you will feel it while interviewing and then you can make a decision. There is no harm in putting yourself on the market and seeing what else is out there if for nothing else but brushing up on your interview skiils. Good Luck!
