Sub asking for more money?

Is it ballsy of me to ask a district for more money?

I went to a different district (in addition to those that I already sub at)..

since I am fluent in spanish, I was told they are desperate for subs, and even fulltimers that speak spanish.

i heard it payed the same or a bit more, so I said sure, I have nothing to lose..

well I applied, started subbing, and found out they pay $30 less than my other districts... yes its peanuts, but to a sub's per diem peanuty salary, thats almsot enough to pay a babysitter for the day...

will I come across selfish or crazy if I approach the district about this ?

Esp being that they truly need spanish speakers, I would think they would pay more for it..
but then again... who knows...

am I out of my mind? Chat Icon

Re: Sub asking for more money?

Where do you sub? In the paper I saw Wyandanch pays $180 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I get paid $80 at Longwood.

But I guess thats cause Wyandanch is more dangerous...

ETA- They won't pay you more, its a set pay limit...

Im referring to Brentwood.. they start at $85 Chat Icon

The 2 that I sub at are well over $100. I thought one was $117. I have to double check.. (theyre direct deposit, so I forget exact amounts)

One fellow sub told me that on her way out of a school in Wyandanch they BEGGGED her to come back tomorrow

Re: Sub asking for more money?

Sub pay is contractual - I doubt they would give you more.

ETA: And honestly, with the over supply of teachers, I don't think I would even ask. Why would they pay you more, when there are people a lot of people who are willing to do the same job?

I agree with why would they pay me more, but having heard the story where they BEGGGED a girl to return the next day (at a different district, but also a "rough area"), and having heard from teachers that they are looking for subs desperately and even full timers that are bilingual....

but that's all in a different district. I don't think I would compare that to what you are making. Like someone else said, Wyndanch probably pays that kind of $$ for a reason. I don't think you can use that fact to ask for more $$ in your district.

A good friend of mine is a middle school principal in Brentwood, and she said they do not pay more than the average Suffolk school. It is dangerous. I know middle school is actually where the gang violence begins and they start recruiting members. Brentwood apparently has 2 high schools that are connected and the gangs meet between the schools to have huge fights. Elementary might not be too violent. Since sub pay is contractual I don't think they could give more anyway, and asking for more might ruin your chances at a full time position.

Exactly what I was trying to say - thank you!

I would not rock the boat for just a few more $$$. You might find yourself getting called less and less to sub. Plus, if they think you are unhappy with sub pay - they are probably wondering what else you would be unhappy with. Again, with such an oversupply of teachers, I would not do anything that would make a district question me, IMO.

Sub pay is set - it is in the budget for the year. School districts don't negotiate salaries.

You definitely will not get more and since districts talk to each other I won't even try to negotiate because other districts that you might apply for might hear about it and not look at it in a favorable light.

Brentwood from what I was told has a clause in there contract that they are paid the EXACT average of all Suffolk county districts. They will never be the top district and they will never be the lowest paid.

No need to get yourself all worked up Karen Chat Icon

and I can also say, ya know what, I might as well go to a much safer area for 30% (or so) more money... doesnt take a brain surgeon to make that decision.

and as far as getting called. none of the schools call me. we can set it to "dont call" because we work when we can, especially in my case.
and if i was available, I could work every single day... (at many good schools that request me)...

I asked a reliable source and they did say that sub pay is pretty much set in stone.

Wow - drama on the teacher boardChat Icon Why bite someone's head off for giving you an educated opinion (being that most people on this board have jobs in education) - no one was rude to you, no one rolled their eyes at you - although when I read that you were asking if you could negotiate sub salary I was Chat Icon Why would you be nasty to someone because they disagree with what you would like to try to do at a school district - which, BTW, is a completely inappropriate thing to ask a school and would not look good on your part.

Didn't see this post until now, but I agree with all of this. Chat Icon

Like mrswask said, asking for a salary increase would most certainly not look god and could quite possible ruin your chances of subbing in that district.
