I usually stay away from it anyway, but with Easter and all I had been eating alot of chocolate....Now Im nervous about that too...I just got a BFP today....I feel like Ive done everything wrong because I didnt know I was pregnant....What can you guys tell me about caffeine while pregnant??Thanks!

Re: What about caffeine??
You shouldn't have too much caffiene while pregnant. I don't remember the exact numbers tho. But chocolate on Easter is fine.
I know that most doctors (mine included) ok's one cup of coffee a day. I can't keep coffee down, so I substitute soda.
Stress is worse than chocolate.

Re: What about caffeine??
If I had to stay away from chocolate, then I would die. I did try to cut it down in the first trimester and I didn't drink any caffeinated drinks until week 13. One thing you want to stay away from is artificial sweeteners.

My doctor said artificial sweeteners were fine....I drank crystal light the whole time and my doctor said that was fine...every doctor is different

Re: What about caffeine??
I wouldn't worry about the amount in chocolate - my doctor told me one cup of coffee a day was fine - I have been avoiding it and have maybe had 5 cups total of either decafe tea or coffee since getting pregnant. I wouldn't stress too much - the girls I work with were drinking 2-3 large cups of coffee a day.

Re: What about caffeine??
You're not sharing the same blood as the baby yet, so anything you did prior to your BFP- don't think twice about.
As far as going forward... it's up to you and what your Dr. says. As the girls already stated, everyone is different. I have a little bit of caffiene a day, and I don't think I'm horrible b/c of it.

Re: What about caffeine??
You would have to eat about 1,000 chocolate bars to be affected by the caffeine. I have eaten way more chocolate during this pregnancy then I eat normally. I also drink soda. I'm not worried.

Re: What about caffeine??
Most things, aside from certain medications and street drugs, are OK in moderation, during pregnancy.
At the risk of sounding like a complete no-it-all...Im going to say that in the past 14 years since I had my first child..things continue to be added and taken off from the list of no nos..The ONLY thing that has stayed constant is smoking!!!!! Which we all know isnt good for us any way pregnant or not!
People in other countries dont think twice about having a cocktail or two...In Japan they eat Sushi throughout pregnancy..
Have that cup of coffee..or that piece of chocolate...

Re: What about caffeine??
chocolate is perfectly OK in my mind
I drink tea everyday - for my first child the OB told me 1-3 cups (not mugs) of coffee a day was fine. My sister's OB told her to drink a little coffee to get rid of her caffeine withdrawl headaches!
The first time they said diet soda was OK, this time I was told that artificial sweeteners can cross the placenta - so I agree - it all changes.

Re: What about caffeine??
My doctor told me one cup of coffee a day is fine, but most days, I can't stand the taste. I used to love coffee too!
So I just don't drink it, and I honestly don't miss the caffeine at this point. I do have herbal tea in the morning.
But if you want a cup of coffee, that should be okay. I wouldn't think chocolate is a problem unless you're eating boatloads!

Re: What about caffeine??
I think the best thing any pregnant woman can do for herself is read the "what to expect" book or something similiar. It has almost everything you need to know about just about everything!

Re: What about caffeine??
Everything in moderation is good for you in one way or another (drugs and alcohol and prescription medication do not count of course). I drink appx. 1-2 cups of coffee a day, but I stay away from soda and other caffeinated drinks.
