Bring an older dog home

Bella is doing very well - eating, going to the bathroom, showing us affection, etc. However, she is very, very skittish still. Any noise, quick movement, etc, and she flies into her crate. I know this is a big change for her and my heart just melts for her. How long does it take for adult dogs to get used to your house?

Sorry, I know I have asked a lot of questions here lately -- thanks for all of the help, suggestions, and advice. LOVE the people on this boardChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Bring an older dog home

When we brought my first rescue home, Hans, he was 10 yrs old & it took him about 2 weeks to get used to everything. He also had vision issues, so I think maybe he took longer than if he could see at 100%.

When we brought our 4 year old cocker home it took him a few weeks to get adjusted to everything. My mothers dog who was previously abused and was about 2 when she got him took a little over a month to get accustomed to his new environment. Both dogs are now thriving. Congrats!

Katie adjusted very well... especially considering she changed homes twice in about 2 months (our friends kept her while we waited to move into our new apartment). I'd say it took about a week. The biggest adjustment for her was leash training since her original owner had a yard that she always was allowed to roam around in.
