Safe antidepressant to take when PG?

I was just wondering if anyone took or knows of which antidepressants are somewhat on the safer end to take when PG?

I take Paxil currently...Not for depression...For panic attacks and it works great for me....but the FDA has now STRENGTHENED their case about not taking it during PG and made it a class D drug.

I dont think I will want to take it when Im PG.

Feel free to FM me if you would rather not post publicly...

THANKS!

my doc said prozac was the best to take, b/c it has been around for so long, that it is the most studied.

also he recommended zoloft.

Hey Donna. I was talking to the psychiatrist at work today. She said that there has been a buz about this for a while and that all of the SSRI's are soon to follow.

Prozac has been around the longest and studied the most.

I immediately thought of you when I saw the FDA warning and was going to ask her what she would suggest but she got a call. Remind me and I will talk to her about it Monday. She is a wonderful doctor and I would trust her with my life!!!

Re: Safe antidepressant to take when PG?

Thanks guys...

Unfortunatly I dont know if I could ever be off the meds. I started them about 11 years ago for panic attacks that were ruining my life. I weaned myself off for a while and then my first PG they hit again hard and Im afraid the hormones of PG will do that again. I would consider being off them, but am hoping to find an alternative to the Paxil that is much safer I could fall back on.

I appreciate all the advice!

Klonopin (sp?) is safe to take while preggo. A friend of mine had anxiety attacks while she was pregnant and her psychiatrist and ob agreed this was the best & safest medication for her to take.

Klonopin is NOT safe. It is a benzodiaaepine and especially should not be used in first or third triemesters. I'd have to check but off hand I think it is category D too. They do prescribe it sometimes though but it is always a risk/benefit type of thing.

You're right, klonopin is a category D, as are all the other benzos. Buspar is specifically for anxiety, and is category B.

Re: Safe antidepressant to take when PG?

Defitely work with the doctor who prescribed the meds and your OB to find something that is good for you if the one you are using is questionable. But DEFINITELY stay on something. Like you said, going off them doesnt seem to be an alternative and I dont think when you are preggo is the time to play around with trying to go without. Good Luck with it, of course you have to take care of yourself first and foremost.

I dont believe any dose of Klonopin is "safe" in the first or third triemesters. However, it is always a risk vs benefit consideration and some people take it and are fine. Just shouldnt be your first course of action.

Re: Safe antidepressant to take when PG?

I currently take paxil. I use to take 20 mg, but I have cut back to 10 mg. I dont have much of a choice being my anxiety is so bad and the effects were worse for the baby. I was off paxil for a month before I got pregnant and did not start taking it again until I was 10 wks.

I have done extensive research, spoken to many of dr's over the last 15 yrs. I have had anxiety. To be honest, the medications dr's believe to be safe is b/c they haven't done studies on them, so they don't have any conclusive evidence they are "bad". Also, paxil was branded as a dangerous medications, however, only one study was done. Women who are pregnant and do not take Paxil have a 1% chance of having a baby with a heart defect, ranging in severity. A woman who is pregnant and takes Paxil only has a 2% chance of having a baby with a heart defect. Also, the baby's heart develops during the 1st trimester and the main parts of the heart (valves, chambers, etc) are already formed by 10 wks. That is really where the 1% increase lies in the potential damage to the heart.

It was a big decision for me to take paxil while pregnant. Unfortunately, I dont have much of a choice.

Re: Safe antidepressant to take when PG?

I actually switched to Zoloft and its works ok...although Iw ould have rather stayed on the paxil. For me the risks of the paxil were too great for me.

I will definatly return to the paxil though once I have this baby and Im hoping more research will be done on it in the future.
