Any K teachers out here?

I had a few q's for K teachers, particulary if you have taught other grades than K (& also K).

This is my 2nd year teaching K and I taught 2nd grade for 4 years before.

Thanks ladies....my Q is this....next year I may have the option to either teach 3rd (my favorite grade) or I may be forced to teach K....(I've taught Pre-K 3's for one year & really did not care for it at all)....

I just wanted to know how you feel K is, esp. if you taught 2/3/4...what makes it a challenge? What do you love about it?

Our baby is due the beg. of July & I plan on going back in Sept...people are telling me K is the way to go b/c I'd have an asst & someone to fall back on should I be running late or have to leave early (I teach in a catholic school & basically if I wasn't there, she'd take over the whole class---she's a parent, but has been the K asst. for years).

Comments/thoughts?

Do what you are comfortable with. You are lucky to have an assistant, in nyc we do not. I wish we did!

I agree completely with this. Even though the little ones def. can wear you out a bit, you really dont have much work to take home with you. So you can kind of "leave work at work". Plus, with the option of being able to leave the TA with the class...if you had to run home for something, I would go with K.


K might be overwhelming in the beginning, because some kids get nervous coming to school, but you will prob be able to relate right along with them, because you are now leaving someone at home too.

I might also be a little biased on this, because if I could choose to teach any grade, it would be K. Good luck!

I taught Kindergarten last year. It was not for me. The kids are extremely dependent. I had an assistant but yet I was severely exhausted by the end of the day. I personally feel kindergarten is the absolute hardest grade to teach. I now teach 2nd grade... I have never been happier. :)

Thanks ladies for all your comments/expereiences...I'm kinda leaning towards 3rd, even though its a tough class coming up...and the Pre-K class is sweet/adorable.

I had taught Pre-K b4 & remember dreading coming into work...I know they were 3, but I don't see 5 being too much different.

Also I'm kind of a person who wouldn't want to have an asst. over my shoulder all day/every day...in 3rd there's more freedom etc. (but of course, it has its cons too).

But thanks for your opinions....
