UPDATED: Do I move ahead with the interview?
UPDATE: So, I went on the second interview b/c the director was really interested in meeting me. She told me that she can't make the position permanent b/c she needs to legally hold it open for the person going on maternity leave but...she strongly doubts the woman will be returning. On top of that, she thinks my skills are great and I once interviewed with one of her VPs who was impressed by me and said she may have an opening as well should the woman return. I felt comfortable with that answer and I can still interview (or I plan to) during the three months temporary - but it is a risk. DH is scared but supportive. I mean there is a slim possibility that in three months they'd let me go. Would you take it?
I recently interviewed for a position that is contract to perm. but there is no guarantee about the perm. part. I would be covering for a maternity leave and I don't know how I could guarantee a permanent spot, even if the contract letter said something like "upon performance will be offered fullt-time position" - does that guarantee a job? They are hoping that whoever they hire for the few months will stay on, but again - not a definite.
I'm not sure I should go for the second interview. I can't take it for four months and then be out of a job.

i dont like how that sounds..but you might as well go on a second interview, you can still decline the job if its offered to you.

Re: UPDATED: Do I move ahead with the interview?
Personally I would take the job for 3 months BECAUSE this is a rough time to be unemployed--most pple do not quit, look for new jobs, hire in summer months...if any1 leaves a job or hires someone they USUALLY do it in sept or october (after summer hrs at a job finish) so i think ur chance of finding another job at this given time is 2 times as difficult..at least u can work through the summer--keep ur resume out there..and in 3 months when it is prime hiring time u will hopefully get the job or be in a better month to be applying..
hope this helps! (and makes sense!)

Re: UPDATED: Do I move ahead with the interview?
Depends on how much you need the job to sustain your livelihood. If you got enough dough in the bank to continue looking, go for it.
If you don't, take the job and jobhunt some more. Then when you get in the door, try to find out from the other employes abit more about this person on maternity leave. Sometimes it helps to just get in there and see what the exact situation is. If she's the type who would not come back or if the company is even the one you want to work for!
You gotta think positive. They are trying to sell you the position as much as you are trying to find a good fit. Take it and just continue searching for your peace of mind!
good luck!
