Kind of seems like it is just related to how affluent the district is, since the more affluent students take more AP exams.  Not because they are more qualified, but because the parents force the districts even if the students are not deserving.

While I'm all for Long Island schools making the list - determining it by how many students take AP classes is completely flawed. I know a number of AP teachers in public schools in LI and the challenge they face all the time is that the school keeps admitting more and more students into AP classes when the students should not be in it. In one case I know a person teaching 3 sections of AP and she says that there are really only enough qualified students to fill maybe one class.
It's completely the administration trying to make the schools look good by inflating the AP attendance, whether justified or not.
They should rank the schools by how many students PASS the AP tests - not how many students take the class.

These administrators are not stupid. They know that people look at this "scores" and will shove as many students as humanly possible into these classes to boost their ratings, whether or not the student belongs there.

Here are the schools on LI that made it - I would certainly say that this is WAY MORE than a handful. And I may have even missed some. I believe that all of the schools on the list are public schools. No private schools from long island showed up as best i could see.

This ranking list is very skewed - I've read an article about it how it doesn't truly represent the best schools - maybe in some cases, not in all. Read the above explanation again - all it is is a ratio of # of AP tests, etc against # of graduating seniors - if you have a school that does not require for students to be recommended to take AP Classes and has open enrollment for them - they are going to have a large # of students taking them and a higher percentage/ratio. That's how you have schools like Baldwin and Floral Park at a much higher number than expected.
The article I had read gave the example of on of the top 10 schools last year which was in LA County - they said that this school had a very large drop-out rate and was not a good school- so there weren't that many seniors who actually graduated - I guess the ones who graduated took a decent amount of AP classes - so since they had such a low number of students graduating compared to seniors taking AP Classes - they had a VERY high number - which is not accurate.

I wonder about that accuracy of this list - or how they are comparing this, and why some school districts are not on it. Wantagh isn't listed, but Baldwin is 920?
Don't stress out about it. When DH and I went to Wantagh HS they offered quite a few AP classes as well as college classes through CW Post and Syracuse. Not a lot of kids took the AP classes since you weren't guaranteed college credits, where if you took the other classes you definately got the credits. And this was all before they were named Blue Ribbon Schools (whatever that means).

I teach in one of the top LI districts on this list. While it's an "honor" to be on this list every year the reality is that the findings are based solely upon a simplistic formula: the number of Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) tests taken by all students divided by the number of graduating seniors. Unfortunately this doesn't give the whole picture of how well school does. It's simply one statistic that gets A LOT of attention b/c it's published in a national magazine.
The bottom line, which my principal always reminds us of, is that no matter what "formula" is used on any of these "tests" our school is always one of the top LI schools. The reality is that you need to look at the big picture not just one "flawed" statistic.

I saw this article as well. Newsday also just put out a list this past Sunday about all the schools on LI and the rates of which students pass at the 4th and 8th and 12th grade levels, who goes onto college, which districts are better, etc. It is just so hard to tell which is accurate and which is not?
My husband and I are looking to reloacte. We live in a 2 bdrm apt in Bayport - has a great school district but we can't afford a home here, so the question becomes where can we afford to live that has a good school?? Not too many make the grade..sad! We would stay here if we did not need more space. A 2 bdrm apt fills up quick with 2 little girls!!! LOL...

I don't know anything about other schools outside of the metro NY area. I looked at the LI list and was not surprised about most of them. I was surprised on a few but I don't know those schools so well.

I personally think that this list is a crock... It is only based on how many AP tests are taken... not even the scores... So If a school can afford paying for AP tests for every student to take does that mean that that school is better?
I noticed some schools that were on that list in another state. I had college roommates that went to these schools. These were not fabulous schools. Not a lot of electives offered, and a not so great student population. Some of her friends even had "relationships" with some of the younger teachers. I would not choose what district i moved into based on that list...

That list is BS..a school could have the worst academic results but be #1 on this list if all their classes were AP classes. Another example how the media slants education since the common folk look at this stuff and say wow my school made the list!! What the list doesn't tell you is how many of those students taking the exams actually achieved scores that are college worthy?
Newsweek knows they are not representing schools the right way but it sells magazines. Last year a superintendent, I don't know what state, said they made the list and he didn't understand since they were the 3rd worst school in the state!!

When you take the college classes at WHS they are (or at least they were 15 years ago) through CW Post or Syracuse. So they transfered to most colleges. I went to Hofstra undergrad, and had almost my entire first year complete before I started due to my transfer credits. There are a few exceptions, like DH went to an Ivy league school who didn't accept the transfer credits, but they did accept his AP credits (he took both AP and college classes). Back when we went they didn't have an International Baccalaureate program, you'd have to call the school about that.

It's more difficult to pass the AP test than to get the Syracuse or Post credits. The Syracuse and Post classes are not taught by college professors and I've worked in college admissions and never saw a grade below a B for one of those classes, while I saw many students receive grades below 3 on AP exams. So generally I think the students who are lower achieving are advised to pay for the college credits (more expensive than the AP exams) since it is a guarantee of credit.
