LI Leave Replacements - Good opp, or dead end?

A co-worker and I were just discussing this - How do you guys feel about leave replacement positions? I would be concerned that I could not find a job after the end of the position. Those who have taken them, do you feel they helped your career? Does a leave replacement position look good on a resume? Any opinions are appreciated...

How long is the leave? If it's a full year, it's definitely a good thing and I would definitely go for it. It could only help your resume and increase your chances of getting a probationary position.
If it's for part of the year (say, a 2 month maternity leave), I'd want to know what the plan was for me after the leave is over. Some schools will promise you work, while others will basically drop you like a hot potato. If they promise you work, I think it's a good stepping stone.

There are just so many variables, it's impossible to know what will help you in the end and what won't. Sometimes you gotta take that leap of faith.

I was on a leave of ab. this year- and the lady that took over for me (the second lady-there were two ) they liked but not for my grade level- and I am coming back this coming school year anyway- However, because the principals see potential in her they are helping her find a position in our school or within the district

So I say, good opportunity

I took a leave replacement that started the monday after graduating school in december and finishes with the school year, so for me it was a great opportunity to get right into what I went to school for. It was mid year so I did not have many options. I was hired elsewhere for subbing at more pay, but I think what I do now looks better than a general sub.

Good opportunity - even if it's short term. I would just try to negotiate being a perm sub or something after the position ends so you are not out of work for the school year.

I would do it to get my foot in the door and some experience but I can't leave my current full time job for one - too risky.

i was a leave replacement for 6 months for a maternity leave... turned down a city job for the opportunity.. it paid off.. the principal really liked me and had me do a demo for the principals in the district.. I was hired for that September!!! I think its a great opportunity..

I think they are definitely a great opportunity - that is how I got my job. Even if you don't wind up getting a job in that district, it is practical classroom experience that you can add to your resume and discuss on interviews.
