Guidance Interview question - update
I just checked my home messages and I got a phone call in response to my application for a middle school guidance position. They said they want me to come in for the writing phase of the interview process. If it was a HS I would imagine they'd want me to wrote a recommendation letter - any clue what I should expect for a middle school?
I went today. There were 25-30 people and it wasnt too bad. They wanted us to write about what we saw challenging with middle school guidance and a situation question. I should hear by next week if I will be given an interview or not.

Re: Guidance Interview question
It is probably more of a situational writing sample. For example, what would you do in this situation...

Re: Guidance Interview question
When I called to schedule and I asked the secretary. She didnt know but I got the impression that I will be with all the candidates (50+) and everyone will have to write something.

Isn't a writing sample question supposed to be a surprise? I didn't know what my writing sample was about in advance, even though a friend of mine was actually on the interview committee. She knew but wasn't allowed to tell me.

Oh, sorry if I misunderstood you. When I went in for mine, I had to sit in a room at a computer and got handed a sheet with the question. It was about testing and learning disabilities (I'm a school psych). There was one other candidate in the room, but her appt was before mine and she was just finishing up. It was timed, I think they gave 30 minutes to write it, save it to a disk and print it. It was also like a computer test, to see if you could do all that on the computer.
HTH. good luck to you.

Re: Guidance Interview question
There's really no way of preparing for a writing sample. I don't remember ever having a writing sample for middle school guidance, but had plenty for hs guidance positions and not all of them were letters of rec. I've been asked the steps of a CSE and the counselor's responsibility in terms of preparation and participation in one, I've been asked the key differences between the SAT's and ACT's (although you would not have this on a ms interview), I've been asked situational questions, I've been asked to write a letter of introduction to my caseload. They will also being looking at your writing skills - grammar, spelling, mechanics of writing.

This was how they did it in one district I interviewed for -- writing sample first and all candidates took in. In that case, it was a Regents question. Good luck
