Driving to Maine?
DH & I would like to take our dog with us on vacation this summer. We are thinking about going to Maine. I originally looked at Ogunquit, but the beaches don't seem to dog friendly. Bar Harbor seems better, since we can go to Acadia Park with her as well. Now, my question is, does anyone have any feedback/recommendations on things to do, places to stay, etc. Also, how long is the drive? Should we stop somewhere and stay for a night to break up the drive, amybe RI? Any info is appreciated! TIA!

We just went to Kennebunkport for two nights and really loved it. That is further south, though. It took us five hours and that was with no traffic and DH's lead foot.
Bar Harbor/Acadia would definitely be 6+, Acadia maybe even more like 8.
If we ever did Acadia we would probably break it up somehow with Boston or Newport.

Bar Harbor is very far. A lot further then Ogunquit. I think very far for a dog.
We drove and had no idea how really far it is. For over an hour you are in no mans land back country
I will never go back to Bar Harbor or Acadia. I def did not think it was worth the drive.
We did like the hotel though. We stayed at the Bar Harbor Inn.

ETA: Why don't you think the beaches are dog friendly? When we go I always see a ton of dogs. Usually by the footbridge.

Well since I have a house up in central Maine I would say that Bar Harbor is definately 6.5 hours to 7. It depends on what time of day you leave & how fast you truly drive. I made it home yesterday morning with my parents in 6 hours flat.
With that said, it is not a long trip for a dog. We use to do it all the time with my dog stopping twice to let him out. I am not a fan of southern Maine as I feel it is too "city" like for me. Bar Harbor is not my most favorite town to visit but I think Arcadia is nice. The entire state is "dog" friendly though bc most people up there do have them! I would suggest Camden or even BoothBay Harbor...Lincolnville is also a nice little town to visit.
Like I said though, the trip is definately do-able to me with a dog & everything is animal friendly.

When I looked it up, it seemed like other places allowed dogs on beaches all year, but not Ogunquit. Not really sure though.

Kennebunk: Gooch's Beach, Middle Beach, Mother's Beach
From June 15 till the day after Labor Day dogs on a leash are allowed on the beaches before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m.
Gooch's Beach
Mother's Beach
Kennebunkport: Goose Rocks Beach
From June 15 to September 15 dogs on a leash are allowed on the beach before 8 a.m. and after 6 p.m. At other times of the year dogs on a leash are allowed during park hours.
Kennebunkport: Arundel Beach aka Colony Beach
From June 15 to September 15 dogs on a leash are allowed on the beach before 8 a.m. and after 6 p.m. At other times of the year dogs on a leash are allowed during park hours.
Kittery: Seapoint Beach. Fort Foster Beach, Crescent Beach
From June 15 to September 10 dogs on a leash are allowed on the beach before 10 a.m. and after 5 p.m.
Ogunquit
Dogs are permitted within the Ogunquit Beach Area and Marginal Way only from October 1st to March 31st.
Old Orchard Beach City Beach
From approximately Memorial Day to Labor Day, dogs are allowed on the beach before 10 a.m. and after 5 p.m. During the rest of the year dogs are allowed on the beach at any time. Dogs don't have to be on a leash if they are under voice control.
Portland: East End Beach
Dogs are allowed on the beach from the day after Labor Day to the day before Memorial Day, but are not permitted during the summer months.
Scarborough
From June 15 to September 15:
Sunrise to 9 a.m. - Dogs are allowed on the beach off-leash and under voice control.
5 p.m. to sunrise - Dogs on a leash are allowed on the beach.
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. - Dogs are not permitted on the beach.
From September 16 to June 14:
Dogs are allowed on the beach off-leash and under voice control.
Wells
From June 16 to Sept. 15, dogs on a leash are allowed on the beach after 6 p.m. and before 8 a.m. During the rest of the year dogs on a leash are allowed on the beach at any time.

We went to Bar Harbor last year and will be going again in August. I love the area and highly recommend it. It's a long trip (we live in CT and it should take over 6 hours), but well worth it.
The Bar Harbor area seemed to be very dog friendly. We passed many hikers with dogs on the Acadia trails. If you like hiking, Acadia is a great place to go. The views are incredible.

My uncle has a farm in Thorndike which is about an hour away from bar harbor I think. He is way up north. It takes like 7-8 hours boy what a drive. You just feel like you are going forever. When we make the drive we leave at night around 7-8pm and we stop after 6 hours of driving to sleep get up the next morning and continue on. Bar harbor will be great for you and your dogs. Don't know where for you to stay. Most major hotel chains take dogs.

Yes, this is where I think we are going to go. My dog is great in the car and we don't mind the drive, we've driven to FLorida before, so this is easy I'm pretty sure we are going to book this week, thanks for the input!

We went to Kennebunkport last month and absolutely loved it. We took the ferry from Port Jeff to Bridgeport and then it was a 4 hour drive from there. Bar harbor is another 5 hours from the southern coast of Maine.

Bar Harbor is definitely a dog friendly town...just don't know how good your dog will be in the car for so long...it's a loooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnngggg drive.

From Kennebunkport to Bar Harbor, it is 203 miles which is about 3.5 hours...It is not a bad ride & especially since you said that your dog does well in the car, you will have no problem...Try to travel early in the morning on the Maine turnpike & going towards the shore points because it tends to get busy around 11 or so
