Raising a puppy

Hey everybody,

My husband desperately wants to get a puppy. I'm VERY nervous. I have never been around dogs and am actually kinda scared of them generally. We have talked about this for years, and I think I am at the point where I am willing to give it a try. BUT, I have no clue how to take care of a puppy! I know my husband will help, but I also know there will be lots of times when I'm home alone and I'll just have to know what to do......SO....

Can anyone recommend a book or anything to help me learn about taking care of and training a dog?

TIA!!!

There are a ton of books -- and I would suggest formal training. I would get a book on training your specific breed. Also please don't get from a pet store -- either adopt or use a reputable breeder (depending on what you are looking for). Be sure to research the breed before you make a decision...

ITA on all counts...Make sure you research the breed before you buy it...you don't want to end up with a dog that is sooo high energy and you can't keep up with it!
They have tons of great books you can get on training dogs, so I would def pick one up before hand.

Re: Raising a puppy

definetly do your research first.....we settled on a lab, its what i grew up with and we're pretty active people. i bought a book specifically about training labs and also a positive dog training book. puppies take a lot of time and patience, but if you do it right and spend the time you will have a great dog! we did crate training which worked out great.....good luck with your decision and feel free to FM me any questions!

IF we do go ahead and get a puppy, we have decided that he will be a golden doodle. We found a breeder that sounds great and they will have puppies in july and then again in august.

Now I guess it's just up to me to say yes or no!

I was looking at books online and saw "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Raising a Dog." That sounded like it could be for me! Chat Icon

But I also like the idea of a book specifically about goldendoodles. Thanks!!!
