Question for teachers

my daughter is in 3rd grade and she has been learning script for the past few months. Now her teacher wants them to do their spelling tests in script. so she brought me home her spelling test and she got a 94 she was so upset because she always gets 100 since 1st grade. so I look at the test and she took 1 point off for each word that wasnt written proper script like for instance she didnt connect the w and e correctly in a word and its all other little things that I feel shouldnt be spelling issue
when I was in school we took a seperate handwriting test ....DH says I am ridiculous but she spelled everything right and she is upset

My question ....should I be upset or get over it?

I would make it a point to write a note or go into speak with the teacher, and ask was this a spelling test or a handwriting test.

Hmm, did the teacher tell them that they were going to get points off?

Maybe a spelling test isn't the place to have points taken off for handwriting, but I remember on writing assignments having points taken off if the work was not neat and legible.

Maybe the teacher wants this to be a way that students really take care in their handwriting?

I would try to find out her reasons behind why she's doing this, and make sure she made it clear to the students that this would happen.

Teachers should also alert the parents if there is a change in grading policy also...

Sorry, but it seems to me that the teacher was grading for spelling and writing and told the children this. I think instead of arguing the point, it would be more productive to reinforce that a 94 is a good grade and help your daughter improve her handwriting if she wants a 100 next time.

Do they offer separate tests for handwriting? If not, I see why she would take off, but think the children should have been warned. I remember in high school and college essay grades were lowered for poor spelling and grammar--while we weren't being graded specifically on that criteria you'll never learn if they don't...

I am the class mom so I don't want to complain or have an issue with the teacher....we are planning the end of the year party so I will let it be

I am very anal I would still question it.

1. did the kids know they were being graded on handwriting & spelling?

2. will this affect any form of a end of year grade (some schools it does )?

I would also discuss it with her about you cannt always get 100. Its like always winning we all love it but it doesnt always happen

my daughter gets straight A's and she is very smart so one 94 is gonna hurt.
My daughter asked me not to talk to her teacher so I respect this....I talked to another Mother and I feel better now

Is your daughter in Catholic School??

I have taught 3rd grade for 5 years and I didn't have the children write in script until December. When January hit, all kids were expected to write in script for everything. I sent a notice home to all parents though.

I teach 2nd grade this year and I used the same policy...(my principal wanted the 2nd grade to start sooner). It's funny, all my 2nd graders write better than my 3rd graders.

I don't think I would say anything. At the end of the year, third graders should have near to perfect script. Have her practice connecting letters, that seems to be the most difficult when teaching script.
