I need baptism gift advice

My sister recently had a baby boy, the first in his generation, and I have the honor of being his Godmother.

I was soooo excited to go shopping for his very first cross when I found out that his grandmother - my brother in laws mother - already bought him one!

I was so upset! I don't know if I have a right to be as upset as I am...but my family just does things a certain way and she doesnt get it! She keeps buying and buying and buying and even my sister cant stand it.

Anyway, now that I've vented...does anyone know what to get a baby boy for his Baptism???

Thanks in advance,
joey

Aside from buying his Baptism outfit, maybe you can buy him his first rosary and/or Bible. I got my Godson a rosary with his birthstones in it for his Baptism. He's almost 17 and still cherishes it.

You could have the Bible monogrammed or personalized as a keepsake.

Thanks for the ideas. I think I am just so disappointed that things didnt go my way, but these sound like good ideas, and I am definately going to look into them!

I could have written this post myself! I ended up getting diaper pins. I dont mean the big pin but a small rectangle pin with a miraculous medal attached. Very cute and he can use it at the rest of his sacraments. They sell them in Forunoffs and Baby Fortunoffs.

--I will say that I did the same thing to my SIL ( already had the cross)....so she also bought ds a diaper pin.

I would do the same. The kid is bound to lose one (let it be hers). Although in my family, the godmother usually pays for the outfit. The godfather gets the cross.

We bought DH's goddaughter a cross that she can wear when she's older (diamond baguettes). Later we found out that her grandmother bought her a cross for the day (same situation as you described). The cross that the grandmother bought was one for a baby.

At dd's Christening last week the priest blessed the crosses and medals. Maybe a medal for a boy would be nice.

Re: I need baptism gift advice

Maddie actually got a few crosses for her christening... my grandma got her a diamond cross and her god mother got her an awesome John Hardy sterling silver cross which is cool b/c it's like a fun everyday cross... so maybe you can get him something like that?

or- maybe get him a bracelet for when he gets older with his name on it?

This is the one maddie got:

Re: I need baptism gift advice

I am Godmother to my nephew this coming weekend, and I bought him his first Bible and since his name is Joseph, I also bought his patron saint's medal.

I wouldn't buy a second cross. There are plenty of other meaningful things that you can give your godson.Chat Icon

I don't know if they are Catholic, but what about one of those metals (St. Christopher). I know they sell them at jewelry places and Things Remembered. You can put it on the same chain as the cross or buy a chain too.

Cash

Please never give savings bonds.. the interest rate is just too low and for the amount of time it takes to mature to full value, by giving cash, it can accumulate more interest and work out to be more money then the bond would be at its maturity date.
