bouncy seats...would i be unreasonable if

my MIL keeps talking about putting my son in one. (i suppose she still has the one the 2 year old she watches used) i never thought this would be an issue since i often spoke up about not liking them. i am not comfortable with MY child being in one.

would it be bad if i ask that she NOT use it? they just don't seem safe and secure to me...plus i know she would leave the room with him in it. she would also place it on the counter in her kitchen, not down on the floor so if he fell out, he'd fall far and hard on her tile floor.

Why do you think it is unsafe? I def think on the counter it is but Andrew was in one for 8 months or so and we never had an issue if he was strapped in.

Actually sometimes it was the only place he would sleep.

I was sceptical about their safety too when DD was first born and then you realize that it's not. As long as you don't put them on a surface where they can fall off. My DD loved hers and it provided me with much needed alone time (shower- I would bring it in with me to the bathroom- etc.). It becomes your best friend as long as you don't use it to babysit your child. If you feel uncomfortable with anyone using it I'd tell them, but if you end up thinking it's ok, make sure they know the "rules" of using it that you set. It's your child and you have all the say on how they are raised/watched.

You have every right to ask that she not use the bouncy seat.

I agree with the above poster, I never thought of them as dangerous and they were a lifesaver when she was young. If you did decide to let your MIL use it you can be firm about her never leaving the room with your son in it (especially if there is a 2 year old around) and never put it on a raised surface. Also to always use the belt. But I think if she agreed to those rules maybe you could consider letting her use it.

But again, you're the mom and you get the final say, if you're not comfortable than she should respect your decisions.

eta: also some look sturdier than others, and they're not that expensive, so maybe you could buy one with a deeper pocket and/or wider base. But it's up to you.

My bouncy seat was a lifesaver for me. I also brought it into the bathroom with me so I could shower for the first 6 months. I don't know how I could have done it without it! But if you aren't comfortable with your MIL using one, then you should say so and she should abide by your rules.

They are very sturdy. Andrew can still fit in his and it still holds him (not that I do that but it can).

Maybe you should try finding another one. They really are a great invention

I use one now and i love it... Ours has a belt to keep her in.... That is what makes me comfortable with it

I put her in the rainforest bouncer and IMO it is very sturdy with her in it - I have not put it on a counter or a table though. I keep it on the floor when I take a shower - it straps her in and entertains her so she is not moving around in it. Some of the bouncers out there look more sturdy than others do.

I know a lot of people love the infant to toddler one that rocks but to me that doesn't look that sturdy. I don't bounce her around in hers though - I just leave it alone or put the vibrate portion on. If she is figety I don't put her into it.

If you are not comfortable with the one your MIL has why don't you just ask her not to use it or go out and get one that you feel confident is sturdy for the time being.

If I did get her another one, there would be some hefty rules going along with it...he would not be left alone in it at all and it would only be on the floor. My daughter is a snitch, so if she broke any rules, I would find out about it.

Well...my rule(s) of not leaving him alone or in an unsafe spot (the counter top) would be extremely MILD in comparison to the rules the parents of the 2 year old (and his 3 year old sister) impose. They have some wacky rules that she's had to abide by.

In the end, he is my son and I would just hope she wouldn't think I was being rude by asking her not to use it. I haven't opposed any of her other ideas at all, this one just bothers me and it has to do with safety. It always bothered me that she put the other child in it onthe counter and would leave the room. The seat doesn't strike me as sturdy, I will go out and see if I find one that doesn't bother me as much and even pay for it myself.

In the past, she decided DD's booster seat wasn't safe enough (just the seat kind) so I went out and got one with a "back" for her to use. I also bought a carseat for her car (we're now up to 4 carseats for 1 baby)...so I know how to appreciate her "favor" of childcare and don't expect too much from her in return. This is more safety related than a demanding things from a favor.

Why would he be left alone? Wouldn't you be right there? If she is watching your son once in a while, I could see making rules.

If she is doing daycare, that is another story. I know my MIL is doing daycare for my girl, and she wouldn't like it if I tried to put in "rules." Especially because this rule seems pretty silly -- do you really think this bouncy seat would be on the market if kids were falling out of it all the time? Has the two-year old you mentioned had issues falling out of this seat? And I don't think hardly any of the people on this thread have said they were not safe. If you are going to make a rule, you should probably have some basis for it other than just not liking it.

Sorry for the rant, I just think it is funny when people put hefty "rules" on people who are doing them a favor. Sorry if this did not apply to you.

PLEASE consider this seat - it is the absolute best - and its so cushy and comfy - he falls asleep in it all the time!

The baby can't fall out since they are buckled in. If it wasn't a safe product and babies were falling out, it most likely wouldn't be on the market

Emma loves her bouncy and it has a nice vibrating feature that makes her fall fast asleep.
