Student Teaching
Hi everyone! I'm student teaching in the fall and I am scared out of my mind! My master's is in ELED, I'll be spending the first part of the semester in a 1st grade class, the second part in a 6th grade class. It's so hard for me because not only am I nervous, but I LOVE my current job (I'm a Gymboree teacher) and I'm devistated that I'll be going from 5 days of working to 2! Plus the fact that there are no jobs out there is really disheartening!
Any advice about being a student teacher?

BE PREPARED!!! That is the number one piece of advice I have for any teacher. When you are not prepared for the day's lesson, the students know. Give them credit, they are always smarter than what you'd expect and they can tell if you aren't on your game.
HAVE FUN! make it fun for them and for yourself. If you don't, it will be torture for everybody involved.
BE FIRM, BUT FAIR Make your rules clear and then stick to them. Make consequences consistent. Treat them all as equals. You may have a "favorite" (I know we aren't supposed to, but it happens), but the rules have to be the same for everyone.
 oh and get your sleep now! I think that was the most sleep deprieved semester I had

Hopefully you will have a great cooperating teacher.
Learn all that you can.
Don't be afraid to try new things.
Get the kids respect early on.
My teacher had me teaching the first day (the first dat of school too)!
Wow the school too!

I have had a few student teachers and each was different. Here is what I loved about them...
came to scool on time
ready to work
ready to learn
well prepared lessons
ready on a moments notice
moved around the room
helped the students
asked questions
willing to stay after school if needed to prepare
loved the children
Here's what I didn't like...
coming late
stood or sat in the back
left the room without asking several times a day
would rather use what I prepared than create something on own
left exactly when the kids left

GOOD LUCK!!! My advice would be to be very active in the classroom. Never sit and do nothing. Ive seen a lot of teachers just sit and watch ( i guess b/c they are afraid or dont know what to do). ALways get up and help the kids and be active in helping the teacher right from the first day! You be great!!

ITA.
I usually have at least one student teacher and or methods student each year.I agree with all the above.Things that stand out are:
*being on time, looking professional
*taking a subject/unit and coming up with ideas that might work rather than just depending on the cooperating teacher
*Creating a good repoire with students
*Being ready to jump in and learn and have fun!!

great advice!!
also, if you can, try to observe other teachers. my cooperating teacher insisted that I did - and it was great! everyone does stuff differently - I picked up on lots of little tips and techniques.

In addition to all the great advice,
Dress and act as a professional
Branch out and talk to other teachers in the building - it's a great time to network
Ask lots of questions - better to know than to guess
Once you are comfortable, see if you can get the principal to observe you
At the end, get a genuine eval from your cooperating teacher and get an eval from the students

Definitely be friendly with the other teachers. Sit in the faculty room at lunch. Go early, stay late. Help the classroom teacher with everything! Be fair and consistent, but adhere to the behavior plan that he/she has in place already. Invite the principal in to see you do a lesson. Good luck. It goes so fast!

Have fun!!! It was from student teaching that I realized something:
College for teachers is essentially just theory. You don't know ANYTHING until you step through that door and get "down into the trenches". Enjoy every minute of it, there's nothing like it!

Not to be the negative one here, but I just wanted to add one thing.
There are coop. teachers out there who look at student teachers as a way to get out of teaching for a few months. I should know... I had one of these. I took on his entire teaching schedule with no guidance from him. He was never available, never observed me, gave few if any pointers or advice, etc. In hindsight, I should never have let him get away with that, because his job was to guide me through the process. That's what my school paid him for.
So, if you get a coop teacher like that, do not let them get away with that! Be annoying, if necessary, and insist that they help you somewhat. I regret that I did not, because I could have gotten a lot more out of the experience if I had.
That being said, good luck and have fun!!!

Good point. My first half of student teaching was like that - I was fortunate to have a wonderful second half experience.

Student teaching is stressful but so long as your cooperating teacher is good, you will have a great experience.

ITA! Unfortunately that sounds like a fewof the guys in my district. They use Student Teachers for a mini vacation!
