Length or Variety?

Which do you prefer on vacation? To visit a lot of places or just hang out in one or two locations?

I prefer just one or two locations- I have more time to get the feel of an area.

Re: Length or Variety?

I prefer 1 or 2 locations...I like to really get to know the area and feel more like a local than a visitor.

But in the grand scheme- we usually do more variety since the chances of us getting back to a location are very slim. We want to see everything while we can.

Re: Length or Variety?

depends on where we go to be honest. If I'm going to a tropical island, I'd like to stick to one area, one hotel.

If I'm going somewhere, like I did for my honeymoon - then I want to hit as much as I can because I know I won't be back probably ever.

I agree. We went to Hawaii for our Honeymoon. We were gone for 14 days we did

San Fran 2 nights
Ohau 3 nights
Kaui 3 nights
Maui 3 nights
Vegas 2 nights
I knew I wouldn't be able to go back to hawaii for a long time so we tried to get a lot in.

same here. when i went to hawaii, i did maui, kauii, the big island, and oahu, all in two weeks. when i went to europe, i went to rome, cinque terrre, tuscany, siena, florence, pisa, the lake region, switzerland, venice, & paris within a two week period. i don't regret 'rushing around' in either of these places bc i knew i'd probably never have the opportunity to return to either or these places and i was too excited to see 'everything' than to sit in one place too long. i think 3 days in each spot is enough IMO. if i knew i'd be back, i'd relax in one spot more. i just get so excited on trips that i usually like to 'see it all.'

ETA: I also traveled all the way across Canada in two weeks (by train) so I guess I definitely like to see it all. Chat Icon As far as feeling more like a resident than a visitor, I think it's more about the places you visit than how long you're there. For example, if you spend one year at an all inclusive resort with all tourists and don't venture around the local places, you will not get a feel for the place you are visiting, but if you spend ONE DAY and NIGHT at a local place that no tourists visit and spend quality time talking to locals, you will have experienced more of this area than someone who spent a long time in the same area. I can never understand people who take a long flight and just spend the entire time on the resort.
