stupid question: how long do you keep your clothes for?

I have a ton of clothes. I practically bought a new wardrobe every season when I was working but I always feel bad getting rid of the old stuff I dont wear anymore b/c of the $$$ I spent on everything. I always think I might wear that again. The thing is now that I am not working b/c I am home with DS I am not going to wear my work clothes plus nothing really fits me anymore. Do you get rid of old clothes every season or let them pile up like I do?

the rule of thumb is that if something is in your closet for 1 yr or more, get rid of it.

DH and I donate clothes all the time. probably 3x a year or more. a bag here, a bag there... it adds up.

but I have clothes for MANY yrs that I cannot bring myself to get rid of.... so I don't really follow that rule Chat Icon

I am the same as you. When I was living and working in NYC I bought new clothes all the time, but now that I am home with DD a lot of my clothes just don't apply anymore. In fact, last night I did another cleaning out....I feel no need to keep the stuff. Plus, it gives me an excuse to go shopping for new kinds of clothes (casual) that I will actually wear now.

I only get rid on things I no longer wear

I tend to buy classics for work and they have lasted me at least 5 years

cheaper stuff- one or 2 years

but I even have some sweaters from 6 or 7 years ago

if I still like it and wear it- I keep it

I get some fresh stuff every season- but not all new stuff

I always put them away for when I'll wear them again. I never do so they sit in plastic bins under my bed or in the closet. It's depressing.

There is an organization for women who were abused and are now free and looking for jobs, you could donate your work clothes there. I don't know the name of it, sorry to say.

Same here...I have a lot of nice, good quality stuff that has lasted me for the past few years...I only get rid of things that I no longer wear that are either stretched out, washed out or just lack that crisp new look...everything else, as long as its in a great condition, I keep for as long as I am wearing it...
