What would you do?
My cousin just graduated from Sacred Heart in Ct. with her Master's in English. She has been called by numerous school districts on LI for interviews but has not been offered any full-time positions b/c there was always someone more experienced than her. She than decided to send her resume to private schools on the island.
She just went on an interview in Rockville Center S.D. today and they offered her a full-time sub position and told her she would be taking over for a teacher who will be going out on maternity leave at some point.
Would you take a ful-time sub position in a good school district (hoping it would turn into a full-time teaching position) or would you take a full-time teaching position at a private school for now and still apply to the school districts? She wants to make the decision that is best for her career but she doesnt know. She is afraid if she takes a sub position they will keep her that way for years and never give her a full-time teaching position which she heard can happen. At the same time, she wants to teach in a school district and not in a private school forever for obvious reasons.
TIA...any advice you guys have would help.

Re: What would you do?
I would take the perm sub position. Since she is right out of school.. this would be a really good teaching experience without the stress of having her own classroom. In addition, you never know something could open up. However, I wouldn't stay more than a year or two. After working there, she'll be able to tell if the school is good at hiring subs.. if not she should get out. Also, it seems and I could be wrong but it seems that it's not that difficult to get a job a private school. She would probably have the same opportunity next year if she wanted it.

I would take the sub position in the public school. I think it can definitely turn into a tenure track position.
Also, I would ask the district about benefits in the sub position, if it includes them, it makes it even better.

Re: What would you do?
I would take the position with Rockville Centre. It is one of THE best districts on LI. It sounds like they are telling her that it will lead to more. In addition, her permanent sub status in the long run will probably pay more than a private school.

Re: What would you do?
I would definitely take the sub position! And if it turns into a maternity leave, she "should" get better pay based on the district contract.
Plus there's always the chance with maternity leaves that the teacher will not come back.
