Really??? You have pain after hitting something and you don't look at your leg 
I know I stub my toe, I check to see if it is still in the right direction

How do you not check to see what your leg looks like after that kind of pain... and how did he continue to ride his bike a mile without a leg??

I experienced a traumatic leg injury. When it happened, it only felt like a deep scratch. 210 stitches and a 7 inch scar later, I'm lucky to have a fully functioning leg. Some say it's a miracle- the surgeon published before/after pictures in a medical journal.
So, I totally believe it.

That is what I was thinking...wouldn't you notice, if not the intense pain; that your pedalling pattern is off?

That's what I was wondering. I can understand sometimes people don't always feel pain initially but you have to notice that something just isn't quite right.
