must have spice list?
Just wondering if anyone can give me a list of essential spices to have in the kitchen, I constantly come across a recipe that i dont have the ingredients for! TIA

My most used spices (some are repeats from other posters)
Rosemary
Thyme
Oregano
Sage
Salt (duh)
Garlic powder
Garlic salt
Ginger
Cinnamon
Cinnamon Sugar (for cinnamon toast!)
Italian Spices blend
Onion powder
Those'll get you through a lot of recipes. If you're into spicy foods you'll want Chili powder, Curry powder, Garam Masala.
I have a huge spice rack and tons more in my pantry. If you want more ideas of really popular spices, look at some spice racks at BB&B or whatever, they make tons with the spices names right on there. I have one of those and use at least half on a regular basis.
Edited because I can't believe I forgot my favorite, favorite spice: DILL!!

we LOVE McCormicks Cajun Seasoning - we put it on chicken or in cream sauces
the other staples for us have been mentioned but we also always have crushed red pepper and cayenne pepper
