Re: Makeup experts
It's not necessary but it does 2 things. It makes your shadow adhere to your lids better making it stay on longer. It also can alter the shadow that you are using in a very subtle way.

I like to use something I like a light look around my eyes and I certainly do not have that naturally. I like Lemon Aid from Benefit, sold at Sephora. I have tried some others that do not do anything at all and some that look too fake.

Re: Makeup experts
honestly yes I would. If you have dark lids, a dark shadow will will worse on you without it.

Re: Makeup experts
I always put a dot of concealer on my lids and blend...I don't really have DARK lids, but I find that the shadow lasts longer with the concealer than without.

I use concealer too. I use it under my eyes, in the corner, under my brows, and just a little on the lids.

Re: Makeup experts
I put some foundation on my eyelids (bare minerals). It also helps keep the shadow on longer.

Re: Makeup experts
If you have dark eyelids, I would put a little concealer or foundation on your eyelid before applying eyeshadow. Just remember to powder after the base with a setting powder, you could get some heavy creasing with the eyeshadow.
My eyelids are not that dark but I use a base every day under my eyeshadow. It makes the color go on smoother and it lasts much longer on me. Lately my new obsession is MAC Paint Pots, I've been using Painterly and Groundwork for bases ever since they came out and have been very happy with them.
