Teachers Pets!
Well, classroom pets...do you have one? If so, what, how often do you clean and what does it do on vacations?
I'm thinking a gold fish...maybe.

Re: Teachers Pets!
I usually get a beta fish. They are very easy to take care of. I clean the tank maybe once a week or every 2 weeks (depending whether or not the kid over feed it). During the vacations I have either asked a parent volunteer to take the fish for the week or used the food for a week tablets. They work fine. At the end of the year I raffle the fish off to anyone that is interested.

That's a cute idea!

Re: Teachers Pets!
I don't have one, but the science teacher down the hall from me has a gerbil. I think students are assigned weekends to take care of him, because I always see a student on Monday morning carrying his little cage into school.

Re: Teachers Pets!
When I first started, I had two lovebirds. They were actually pretty quiet but did require a lot of care.
I has Madagascar hissing cockroaches one year.
I had two hamsters one year. One had babies, which then gave away to two students. I am not a big hamster fan, so the mom and dad also found new homes at the end of the year. Kids would take them home over vacations.
I also had hermit crabs once. They were easy and cute.
I like the fish idea. Low maintainance and cute!

Re: Teachers Pets!
When I taught in Maryland I had hermit crabs, they were kinda cool and the kids loved them, and I would just take them home for long breaks or the summer. They don't require much except a little food and water. I would still have them but we had a bad snow storm and the school was closed for a week and I couldn't get through to anyone to make sure they had water, and when we finally went back to school they had died.
