Does anyone else follow the "No smiling until Christmas" rule?
I teach 6th grade and I am just Mrs. Smiley on the first day. I can't help it! I greet each kid with a hand shake and a smile. Does anyone put on the teacher face on day one?

I smile... but I do try to be pretty strict with my kids.. it is important for me because i teach HS and I look very young and im on the smaller side, so the kids think they can take advantage of me, so i have to be a little extra tough at first... in my experience it is a lot easier to start being tough and slowly get easy going then start off super easy going, then have to tighten the ropes once things get out of control...

I am a HS teacher. I do smile but I am very tough from day 1. I want the kids to know what I expect of them and realize that they have to work hard in order to do well. The first few months I am pretty strict. But it pays off in the end.

No, but I do not want teh kids to mistake me for their older cousin, so I do have to be tougher. I look a bit young.

I am smiley but I work with emotionaly disturbed kids. I have to walk that line between smiley and strict. I also have the "young look" problem and the male hs students think they can take advantage and be rude and hit on me.

I know I don't follow that rule either. It's just not "me".. I'm a very cheerful person and it kinda drags me down emotionally & mentally to act stern when I'm not. Last year I did the same thing but I didn't have many behavior problems... hopefully I'll be lucky like that again. I can get nasty though when I have to.
