Accepting Weight Gain
Sorry this is long, but I am wondering if anyone else is in or has been in this situation.
My whole life, I have always been very athletic and thin. However, during the beginning of law school, I was very stressed and not eating enough. As a result, I was down to 110 lbs – I am 5 feet 7 inches. My doctor told me I had to gain weight. As school went on, I became less stressed and when I graduated, I was around 120lbs. and wearing a size 2.
Fast forward to today, I have been working full-time for 2 years and I now weigh 126.5 lbs. and wear a size 4. I work very long hours and I do not work out as much as I would like too and my eating habits are ok (could be better, but not awful!).
The last couple of months, I have made an effort to eat better and exercise more, but it seems like this weight is here to stay!!!
I know if I go on a strict diet, I can lose some of this weight. But part of me feels like I really don't eat that bad and I should be happy with my weight.
Has anyone else experienced something similar? I feel like I have an unrealistic idea of how much I should weigh and even though I am a healthy weight now, I just can’t seem to get over this weight gain

Re: Accepting Weight Gain
To be honest, I think 125 lbs. at 5'7'' is a perfect weight. I think most of us have gained weight through life's events...college, work, marriage, babies, etc. But I think your weight is perfect for your height!

Re: Accepting Weight Gain
You're a size 4! That's fantastic! Forget what the scale says, or what you used to be when you were younger and have a faster metabolism. Size 4's look great in pretty much any clothing, and are generally envied throughout the population as being thin but not so thin they look sickly. Size 2's can look a little sickly, especially at 5'7". If you don't like your body shape, go to the gym and tone up a little. At 5'7" and under 130 lbs., you must have so little body fat - any muscle work you do will show up really fast (like 6 weeks fast).

Re: Accepting Weight Gain
Thank you very much for all of your responses! I debated about posting this because I didn't want it to come off the wrong way. I think I was just feeling down because I had to face reality and give away most of my pants and jeans because they no longer fit.
As much as I love buying new clothes, it sucks to replace perfectly fine clothes!! I bought a few new pairs of pants this weekend so I'm moving forward with my new clothes and will stop obsessing over this! Thanks again!

I have to disagree. I'm 5'7" and a size 0 and I certainly don't look sickly What size you are and how you look depends on your body type. I just happen to have a very slim build, so that's why I work so hard at the gym, lifting heavy weights to give my body a more curvy appearance.
To the OP, don't worry about what the scale says. Just eat right (making sure you're eating the proper amount of calories), exercise (weights weights weights!!!! and then some cardio....) and you'll be fine. Think more about how you look in the mirror than how much you weigh or what size you are.

to the OP.
I understand how hard it is to give away your smaller sizes for larger ones..but ask yourself this
how do you look? how do you feel? you say you are eating healthier...are you able to be active.
you are still considered on the lower side of healthy for your height if you are a small frame.
I know it's hard mentally, but maybe you should get to know your newer, more filled out body better. it sounds lame, but I like the way I feel at times more than I like what the numbers on the scale and the tag in my pants say.
as an fyi, here is a general guide (though I know your issue is not about being "big" more than being "bigger" than you have been used to)
Heght Small Medicum Large frame 4' 10" 102-111 109-121 118-131 4' 11" 103-113 111-123 120-134 5' 0" 104-115 113-126 122-137 5' 1" 106-118 115-129 125-140 5' 2" 108-121 118-132 128-143 5' 3" 111-124 121-135 131-147 5' 4" 114-127 124-138 134-151 5' 5" 117-130 127-141 137-155 5' 6" 120-133 130-144 140-159 5' 7" 123-136 133-147 143-163 5' 8" 126-139 136-150 146-167 5' 9" 129-142 139-153 149-170 5' 10" 132-145 142-156 152-173 5' 11" 135-148 145-159 155-176 6' 0" 138-151 148-162 158-179

I can read, thanks. I know what she said and what she meant, but you're right in that people need to be careful what they say. People that are thin CAN take just as much offense to weight comments as people that are overweight, and that's why I said what I said. It was just a reminder......
To the OP, I apologize for the hijack but I just had to get that out.

Re: Accepting Weight Gain
I think the thing is, IMHO, is that everything is relative. While a size 4 is a healthy size for a 5'7 woman, going from a zero to a 4 can be upsetting when you think about it in terms of how many dress sizes bigger that is. I used to be b/w sizes 4 and 6, and now I'm b/w 8 and 10, and I'm 5'5. I realize there are people who struggle more than I do with their weight, but going up two sizes still stinks no matter what your size.
I'm also struggling with the idea of being "bigger" than I was three years ago, and having what I consider to be a different body type. My way of trying not to feel bad about getting bigger, is by thinking of it as a continuum, and be more flexible in my definition of healthy. I also am trying to stop pressuring myself to weigh what I did 3 yrs ago because more I pressure myself, the more stressed I feel. Stress is one of my triggers (that and boredom)
ETA: I am trying to adjust my habits to one that will work for me given my new schedule, lifestyle and time limitations, particularly since I will most certainly encounter other times of stress and change in my future. One practical thing I do, is when I go out to eat I try to order a salad and an appetizer rather than an entree because I often find that the appetizer portion is plenty for me. Plus, I save money too! Or, if I want an entree, I separate half of it right away and focus only on eating one half of the entree and bring the other half home

Exactly - everything is relative. I think most of us are struggling to move down from a size that someone else would be thrilled to have. Being a size 2 sounds great when you're a 4, but being a 4 sounds amazing when you're a size 8, you know?

I have to agree. I am very offended when people make weight comments about being thin. I work hard in the gym to maintain my weight. I am very short so it is hard to stay slim, but I am proud of my work. I hate when people make underhanded comments that they pretend are compliments about my weight.
