In need of advice!

I swore Id never do this, but I would like some outside views/opinions, and since you never know who "knows" you- I need to keep my identity private.

I currently manage a small business. Its just me the owner and maybe 12 staff members. I handle mostly everything and for the most part enjoy the job. The owner and I get along well, however he/she tends to be somewhat "moody".

The way he/she addresses staff issues, is not at all professional. He/she tends to use a very aggressive tone, and speak down towards the staff, even in front of other staff. Now I'm not saying the issues he/she addresses are unreasonable, however IMO its never ok to speak down to someone, and thats not how you "manage" people.

I try to deal with the staff myself, because I have a different approach to things (I do believe you catch more flies with honey- Ill ask you to resolve the issue at hand nicely- if you choose to ignore me after that, well than thats a different story- but I try to respect everyone, best I can.) He/she on the other hand- does not feel he/she needs to be anyones "friend". He/she is trying to run a business, and will speak to anyone he/she wants, anyway he/she wants.

In the past week 3 people have quit, unexpectedly because of said owner. They did not feel the way they were treated/spoken to was fair, and left w/o giving any notice. Needless to say- I worked 13 hr days all this week, to fix the pieces of the puzzle.


Today 3 other staff members came to express their concerns about said owner, and stated they would not be returning to work on Monday

How do I tell my boss- the OWNER of the company, that his/her people skills suck????


I tried to address the situation once before and he/she jumped down my throat. Today- I beated around the bush about peoples unhappiness, but made it apoint to say - that I will not continue to work 13 hrs days because he/she cant keep staff (Ill put in the extra hours, when its needed- but Im not gonna do it, just because he/she talks to people like their a piece of sh!T)


What do I do? How do I handle this?

I think the fact that so many staff members have left because of said owners, that should be proof enough.

No need to candy coat it. It is what it is.

I don't think he/she cares that the staff is quitting- its my problem!!!!

This is the type of job that w/o a full staff, the company will be shut down...

Im so nervous that if owner dosent change their attitude, Im going to be out a jobChat Icon

ITA!

And if you feel it's that important to say something then come up with an exit interview for the people that have quit. Once exit interview is complete, show said owner. This way you aren't saying anything and he can read for himself he has terrible personnel skills.

also, what kind of job is it if you are going to end up doing everything because people are quitting.

there is no easy way around this. People are leaving because of the owner.

There really is no way for me to tell you the "field" I'm in- but lets put it this way- I cant complete my work, if I'm busy doing the work, of the staff who quit...


How do I tell the person who signs my paycheck, The person whose business is my livelihood- that they need to change?

I agree with developing an exit inteview this way your boss will see it in writing. However, you mentioned that you don't think the boss cares why or who is leaving which is pretty foolish on their part since a mass exodus usually indicates problems. I'd bring it up again and maybe see if anyone that has quit would write a letter stating why.

Tough spot to be in, I wish I had more ideas.

I'd be sending my resume out. From what you've said the owner is not going to change regardless of how you try to get the point across. Especially if they know they can rely on you to get the work done.

i agree.

If this is the way the owner has always been, you're not going to be the one to change them and to be honest, if it were me, i wouldn't even say anything because it can get totally twisted around- doesnt seem worth the headache.

Basing off the little bit I know in this story, if I were you I'd give myself 2 options.

Either develop the exit interview and pass along to your boss and hope he/she does some serious restructuring within the company that will remove him from any interraction with personnel.

Or start sending out resumes and look for a new place of employment.


Well there is a third option, do both.

Regardless of which you choose, sounds like you have a difficult boss that I wouldn't want to work with.

If I were you, I'd not say anything and start a serious job hunt. You can't change people, but you can change your situation. I'd work on the thigns you can change, rather than the one thing you can't, and in this situation, that change is your job.
