for those who have been to Ireland
our trip now if definite. we are booked. leaving 4/16 and coming home 4/25. landing in Dublin, traveling around to Galway, adn flying out of Shannon.
I had a quick question. I was planning on buying some Bellek pieces and Galway china while there. With the Euro at the rate it is, is it actually worth buying there or am I better off not even bothering.

Bets idea - and all the major stores in Ireland had this - buy the pieces there - they're cheaper there than in the US in most cases and they will ship to your home so you don't need to worry about traveling with the pieces.
And use your credit card - the conversion rate will be better than using cash, IMO.

i have to disagree with above post. i would say most Irish china and crystal are so easily attainable in the States now that you can get it almost as cheap in the U.S. Wth the Euro rate soo poor right now and Ireland THE most expensive nation in the EU right now... honestly, i wouldn't bother. Prices on EVERYTHING in Ireland is overinflated right now. No harm in looking, you might find some deals, but I wouldn't expect it.
Also, the conversion rate on the credit card is usually at least 3% of the total purchase. But overall, be prepared to get screwed on both the Euro to dollar exchange as well as the very, very high cost of living in Ireland right now.

I thought I had misread it but the dollar is so weak abroad there is no point to buying stuff like that overseas. You can buy it probably much cheaper in the states.
eta...this made me giddy to think how far my pounds are going to go in the states now!! Hooray for me!

I just got back from a week in Ireland and England and the rate of exchange is the worst I have ever seen it It cost me EUR 130 to get GBP 80. I can't imagine what it would have been to exchange from $s!
If you want to purchase Belleek or Galway/Waterford Crystal in Ireland, your best bet would be in Duty Free on your return to the US. I bought a beautiful Belleek frame yesterday in Dublin airport for EUR 28 (less than $40).

Don't kill me when I am shopping on LI screeching with joy at how cheap everything is!!! I exchanged £400 last week and got $755...Roosevelt Field, here I come!!!!
