Would it be dumb to look for a LI job if I knew I might be TTC in the summer?

I would like to get a job on LI but I am afraid that I would get it, get pregnant and they have to go out on leave for a few months and then not have a job. I refuse to wait until I get tenure on LI to TTC...

Thoughts on this????????????

Re: Would it be dumb to look for a LI job if I knew I might be TTC in the summer?

Kathleen, I would still look for a LI job. TTC is important, but so is your professional happiness. By law, a district has to give you at LEAST 12 weeks for the FMLA, so even if you're new to a district you would get at least get that. however, you would have to plan on going back to work right away because if you're just a leave replacement or probationary (not yet tenured) they do not have to hold your position. but again, you would get at least the 12 weeks.

Also, i don't know your situation, but TTC is not always easy. perhaps it might take you longer than you mgiht think or you might have difficulty ( of course i don't wish that for you!) but i would go for the job you want and then see what happens. what if it took a year or two to get pregnant and you wasted that time you could have used toward tenure on LI? and then you would still have to take time when the baby is born? i say go for it... life's too short to play "what if"

what's that saying, "God laughs when
we make plans." Do what your heart tells you.... everything else will work itself out in the end.

ETA: in my district f you land a probationary position and then you get preganant, your tenure date is just pushed back the amount of time you took off. (i.e. 4 months or whatever...)

I have to agree with Karen. There are so many "what ifs"...go for it and see what happens. Chat Icon

Re: Would it be dumb to look for a LI job if I knew I might be TTC in the summer?

I really think that it depends on how much time you want to/can take off. If you plan on just taking your 6 weeks then I would say look for a job on LI. But if you plan to take longer staying in NYC may be the better move. Also, if you get tenure in the city (which I believe you would next year) it would only take you 2 years to get tenure on LI once you do make the move.

Lots of things to consider. Let me know if you want to chat. Chat Icon

well said, Karen Chat Icon I just started my new LI job (used to work in the city) and it is 10000000% different than my old school. I could not imagine being prego , standing on chairs to hang work up on clotheslines, doing bulleting boards, dibels, rigby, and 6 portfolios for each kid! (but a lot of ladies do, and I give them soooo much credit!!)

I say go for it!!!!!

I would apply anyway.

We were TTC back in April, never thinking it would happen as fast as June. I was still applying for jobs, and figured oh well, if I got hired they can't fire me. In the end I had no luck getting (out of state) jobs, so I am glad I did not put it off.

In order to get the 12 weeks you would need to qualify for FLMA and if you are in a position less than 12 months, you do not qualify for it. I would think most districts would honor it, but it is not a guarantee.

ETA: All that being said, I would apply anyway! You have no idea how long conceiving can take, and unfortunately, no one plans for it - but I miscarriaged my first.

I will actually be tenured in NYC this year in APril...I taught in NYC from April '04-June '05 and then started in the city again last year so atleast I will have my NYC tenure.

I don't plan on taking anymore than allowed under FMLA...

Since you don't plan on taking that much time off, then I would suggest looking for a job on LI. That is great that you will be tenured in NYC this April then it will only take you two years of teaching on LI. Also, your tenure date on LI will only be pushed back the amount of time you take off for your leave.

i completely disagree.

there have been many untenured teachers that got pregnant in my LI school...even those in their first year! they CANNOT FIRE you because you are pregnant!!!

you need to do what's right for YOU. you never know what will happen with TTC, and you never know what will happen with the job hunt.

i definitely think you should start looking in January and try your hardest to get a job. when you're ready to TTC, you will. and you won't have to job hunt with a newborn next year.

i think if you wait, you'll never do it.

Re: Would it be dumb to look for a LI job if I knew I might be TTC in the summer?

I used to work for NYC and then I left the city in 2006 and landed a job on Long ISland. This year is my tenure year becuase I had my tenure in the city. Well, I am also pregnant and my tenure will be pushed back the amount of time that I am absent. If you want to look for a job on Long Island then go for it. Just make sure you get your tenure in the city so you go on a two year probationary period. also, if you get the job on Long ISland just know that FMLA does not count until you have been at the job for a year. Good luck on your decision and TTC.

i don't know that that's necessarily true. there have been several people in my school that have gotten pregnant in their first year and were entitled to their 12 weeks.

This is true. You do not qualify for FMLA until you have worked for at least 1 year and 1,250 hours. Your eligibility is calculated from the time you take leave. Most likely you will be eligible for FMLA if you get pregnant after working for 3+ months b/c by the time you go out on maternity leave, you will have worked there for 1 year.

Employers can offer more generous benefits than FMLA, but they are not required to give someone FMLA leave or benefits if that person doesn't meet the eligibility requirements.
