Any middle school/high school language arts teachers?
I am going to starting tutoring a 13 year old boy (8th grade) in writing. I'm an elem. school teacher but also certified in literacy k-12.
He is pretty darn bad at writing.
I'm not sure where to begin. From scratch I suppose...
What types of writing do you teach at that age? Narratives, expository, letters, etc?? Everything??
Anyone have any tips for me? Where do I even begin? TIA.

Middle school and hig high school English involves a lot of expository writing. I would check out the 8th grade ELA exam for ideas.

I teach 6th and 8th Language Arts and I have taught 7th in the past... let me know exactly what you need help with- what you want to cover...
6th mostly focuses on expository 7th and 8th- persuasive writing
we do compare and contrast as well (with all three grades)
Responses to literature is a biggie-
use of sensory details and figurative language in their writing

For a good guide, I would look at the 8th grade ELA test. They have the past tests online and you can print them out and practice with them. They are pretty good skill builders and include reading comprehension, writing and listening.
