Must - Dairy

There are also certain fruits and veggies that don't absorb quite as much chemicals as others. For example, blueberries and strawberries draw a tremendous amount of chemicals from the soil, so I'll only eat organic ones. Apples and oranges, not quite as much...

Here's a good article on must-haves:

it is more expensive, so I try to eat ones that I know I'll eat the skin (toms, berries, peppers, etc).

I have yet to go with the meats, dairy products

Milk and chicken are my musts. Check on the brand's websites for coupons.

www.organicvalley.com - usually have milk coupons. The grocery store I shop at doubles manufacturer coupons, so it works out to be close to the same cost as regular milk.

I haven't found coupons for the chicken yet...still working on that! Chat Icon

Re: Those who Eat ORGANIC

I always eat organic milk, eggs, meat, chicken when home. I get organic fruits and veggies when i can but that is much harder.

When out, I of course have no choice and I put it out of my mind. I don't want to get nuts and never enjoy things.

Breads, not worth it.

Thanks for the coupon link!

I buy milk, vegetables, and fruits. Also anything that I eat regularly: oats for oatmeal, popping corn.

Though I don't eat bread, I think bread would be worthwhile because of the recent acrylamide news about bread, french fries. The reports didn't indicate where the acrylamide came from, but I found that acrylamide is used in pesticides for crops.

Re: Those who Eat ORGANIC

Meat, Dairy (cheese, yogurt, sour cream ect) & Eggs are a MUST.

I am buying about 50% organic fruits & veggies when I find things available. I am starting to increase that amount.

Fruits I ALWAYS buy organic: apples, tomatoes, peaches or nectarines.

I do not buy organic grain type products often, but will get there eventually!

And thank you to those who gave the coupon link & the suggested important ALWAYS orgnanic things to buy!

same here, always milk, eggs, and other dairy.
Some fruits, and veg (ex. bananas I get regular)

I have been making the transition to meats and to compensate for the cost we have started to eat meat less often which is a double bonus.

If there is an organic version on the shelf I will pick it up too. ie Raisin Bran, I don't think the cost difference was that much.

always-eggs, milk, half & half, butter, yogurt, pasta, canned veggies, ice cream(DH eats regular), cereal.
Other stuff I try to get organic, if its not avaiable I opt for something "all natural" or with the least artificial ingredients.
I grow most of our veggies during the summer, for the next few weeks I'll shop at a local organic farm stand, then I'll do the best I can to find organic veggies at the food store.
I'm buying organic meats about 75% of the time now.

Re: Those who Eat ORGANIC

Milk or milk products, I always buy organic.
Meats, I always buy organic.
Any fruit that has a thin skin (apples, grapes, pears, peaches, etc.)
Potatoes and veggies.

Things I DON'T spend the money on:

Pastas or breads
Fruits with thick skins like bananas.
Snack foods.

I will say this, though, I really do like to buy everything organic when possible because, at the very least, you are not ingesting all of that high fructose corn syrup. Just buy when things are on sale and know your prices. Stop and Shop is GREAT for organic foods because I love their brand, Nature's Promise, and it doesn't cost all that much more.

Re: Those who Eat ORGANIC

What's the difference between buying milk that has no hormones or pesticides (like Farmland brand) and buying Organic milk?

It could be what the animals are fed. Organic milk comes from cows that are fed an organic diet, I believe that buying milk that has no pesticides or hormones means the cows themselves. I could be wrong.
Do a google search, there are really strict criteria to calling something organic, something all natural, etc. It has to do with the percentage of that product being organic.

I guess I didn't really mean that literally. I'm asking why it would matter because the concern for most when buying non organic milk seems to be the pesticides and hormones. So if one is buying non organic milk that doesn't have either of those two things, I don't understand why you would pay 3 times more for Organic to have milk free of pesticides and hormones (if that makes sense!).

Re: Those who Eat ORGANIC

It is very expensive... I agree that anything where you eat the skin should be organic.... so I'll buy regular bananas and avocadoes... but fruit always organic. That being said, we can never afford strawberries, raspeberries, etc - and they are my favorite!!!

Trader Joes is good with their prices.... Also Wild by Nature you get coupons for spending a certain amount each month....

I dont eat dairy.... But anything soy must MUST MUST be organic. Anything genetically modified with soy is actually very bad for you.... Obviously soy makes up a good portion of my diet. That is always organic....

Oh, ok, haha. I see what you're saying, and as far as I'm concerned, the only thing I trust is when something is labeled organic, since the USDA really controls that. I don't really trust that something that says hormone free and pesticide free is truly free of those things, or else it'd be organic. KWIM?
