ESL help!!
I have a question for ESL teachers or any teachers that work in NYC and have kids that don't speak a word of English. This is my first year in queens, third year teaching in my own classroom. But, I have never had to deal with ESL students. And now I have like 4 kids that don't speak a word of English. They have to do what everyone else does which I think is insane .. such as Teachers College Reading and Writing Workshop. They can't read at all.. and they can't write at all.. because they don't know the language. I need some tips desperately.

did you see my post earlier about making flash cards with pictures and words to leave at their desk as a reference. Our ESL teacher did them for us last year and it really heled my students. Now we have a diff ESL teacher so im not sure if she will do this, so im doing it on my own
I know how you feel last year i had a class of 28 stuents , 13 of them were ESL and 3 were non english speaking.

Any pictures/graphics you can use with them would be very helpful. I am not familiar at all with elementary school programs, but if your writing program doesn't provide scaffolding, that would be a must in my book. Also, when correcting their work I would focus more on the content than the grammar because obviously you are not going to get anything close to perfect from an student who is just learning Engilsh. As much as you can collaborate with the ESL teacher, perhaps s/he can reinforce what you are doing in class and further break it down. I would say at this stage making the student feel comfortable and rewarding even small successes is the most important thing.

VISUAL, VISUAL, VISUAL!
flash cardds, picture cues, musical cues, body language. can you pair student with another student that may know the same language.
COLLOBORATE with your ESL person in your builing... you can't do this alone. GOOD LUCK@
