Applying in NYC?

I'm getting my MS in ELED in December (I'm currently student teaching at a district on LI) and was wondering how the application process in NYC works. Do you just apply to the BOE and they just put you where they need you or do you apply to specific schools? Any info would be appreciated! Thanks!

My advice is avoid Court St. (district headquarters) if at all possible. many principals do their own hiring. my advice is do some research on your own, go directly into schools to drop off resumes, call schools to make an appointment, etc. ask friends if they know of vacancies etc. the more work you do on your own, the happier you'll be.

the board of ed. will place you and/or help you find a placement if needed, but i would go to individual schools first. you need to make sure that you are cleared by the district FIRST, so you will have to go down there initially to get a commitment letter (which means you have a job, you then take that letter to the schools you are looking at... once you find one and get hired, the principal signs it and sends it in). you also have to get fingerprinted by the Board of ed. too.

I have been in the city for many years now, but when I started you could not do anything till you were fingerprinted. I don't know if you still need to go to Court St. but I'd be surprised if you didn't.

I got my job by emailing and sending resumes directly to principals. I didn't have to go to court st. thankfully.

My advice call principals and sell yourself. Ask them to keep you in mind for future openings and send resumes every so often to remind the principal. You can FM me your resume and I could give it to my principal if any openings open.

DO NOT go through court street. I went to court street originally, they wanted to give me a commitment letter. Do not get a commitment letter through court street! If you do, you will only be allowed to work in certain districts.. basically districts that you probably don't want to work in. Thank god I turned down the letter. If I didn't, I would not have been able to work where I got hired a week after leaving court street. I just went through all of this very recently so if you have any questions you can FM me.
