I've never used my Crockpot, suggestions on how to start.

My crockpot has been collecting dust for the last 2 years. I want to use it but every recipe I see says to use some type of soup for a base.
Anyone have any recipes that are not soo high in sodium, that I can start with to get comfy with this type of cooking?

i LOVE my crockpot!!! its so nice to come home to a dinner thats already cooked Chat Icon and i think they're pretty safe, becasue the heat is low. i also put the whole thing on a glass cutting board to help keep the countertops from getting too hot.
i just used mine last night to make a pot roast and veggies. i just put the roast in the crockpot, put in a bag of baby carrots, a few potatoes cut up in big chunks, and an onion. i then added a little bit of minced garlic, some thyme, and a little salt and pepper.
you need a liquid, so i used 1 cup of water, and one cup of low sodium beef broth.... but you could definitely just use all water if you want. the onions and garlic cooking in there all day really give it a nice flavor, and the beef comes out sooo tender!! PLUS, i used enough stuff that we'll get 2 meals out of it.. so in a coupel days i'll heat it all back up for a few minutes in teh oven.

here are some past threads.....you don't need "soup" but a liquid most of the time because it cooks the meal slowly. Without liquid, the food burns.

I made a turkey breast in mine the other day....6 lbs, one can of chicken broth, sprinkled poultry seasoning and 5 hours later it was falling off the bone!

Hey T!!!!!

You can appreciate this...my FAVORITE thing to make in my crockpot is corned beef and cabbage. It comes out SOOOOOO good!!!

Other than that...believe it or not...meatloaf comes out really well, too! Chat Icon

I agree about the meatloaf - that's the only way I'll make it anymore. Definitely look up some recipes and give it a try!

I have to admit I was afraid to use it too! OMG this thing is the best invention. Used it for the first time last Easter...probably not smart to try it out on a holiday with a house full of people coming but I did!

I made THE best pot roast ever! My FIL, mother and brother still talk about it. It is a Betty Crocker recipe...I will post it

I am making this tonite from this thread. I will update after dinner. I have only used my crockpot once in the last two years and I am not a chef in the least!

ETA: I made it and it was delicious. A little dry but definately fell off the bone! I couldn't even take it out of the crock pot w/ out it falling apart. Took only 4 hours for us. I put the potatoes in it too and the potatoes were perfectly soft! I totally would have this again, but I would make a gravy for the chicken probably!

SLOW COOKER ROTISSERIE CHICKEN

1 whole chicken
olive oil cooking spray
Lawry’s seasoning salt
aluminum foil

Clean chicken inside and out. Spray chicken with olive oil cooking spray. Sprinkle with seasoning salt. Spray inside of slow cooker with olive oil cooking spray. Note: Do not put any water in the slow cooker.

Roll 3 or 4 wads of aluminum foil into 2”-3” balls and put them in the bottom of the slow cooker. Place the chicken, breast side down, on top of these aluminum foil balls. Cook on HIGH (will not come out the same if cooked on LOW) for 4-6 hours. (3 lb. chicken took 4 hours.) You have to use the aluminum to get the deli taste. This chicken tastes very close to one you would buy, precooked, in the deli section of your supermarket.

Note: Wrap up individual potatoes in foil and place them in the bottom of the slow cooker to make the foil balls; then you have both chicken and potatoes cooked to perfection!

Yield: 1 chicken
Points: 1 point per ounce of chicken

That chicken recipe sounds real yummy, I am going to try it.

I make beef stew in the crock pot, I buy the Mccormick beef stew spice and the recipe is right on it for beef stew, comes out nice.

sooooooooo good

I get ribs and put them in the crockpot and onion sliced up and 2 bottles of sticky rib sauce from bullseye cook on low for 8 hours DELISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
