NYC teachers...

What are your thpoughts on this merit pay thing?

I'm not crazy about it. I don't like the idea that a committee decides how to distribute the money. I can see there being a lot of favoritism.

Re: NYC teachers...

Last year I would have loved it....3rd grade did very well! Gave myself a little pat on the back...BUT in all honesty they had very easy tests last year.

I do not think its fair because...when it comes down to it. A teacher can bust their a$$es to do test prep but if a child chooses not to follow directions, forgets everything you taught (which happens most of the time) is that YOUR FAULT??? NO it's not! It's not reinforced at home!

Re: NYC teachers...

I think its an awful disgusting thing to do. The best teachers can end up with the worst students who dont do their jobs. The morons who thought of this dont know a thing a education. Chat Icon
Unfortunatly administrators already receive pay for good scores and they dont have a thing to do with it.Chat Icon
My 1st year in the city my AP asked how I thought the kids did on the ELA. I told her I thought they did ok and she said "good I could use the $$$$.

I have not heard too much about it, but one thought I have is this...is money distributed only to the testing grade or to all teachers? I ask because if it is only for the testing grades, what happens to the teachers who busted their butts in the early grades to give them the basic needed skills?

Re: NYC teachers...

I think it's ridiculous and unfair. Just because I work at a low-performing school, does that mean I shouldn't make as much as someone who works with better kids? Also, how is it MY fault that my students never study or open a book on their own (which is why they fail by the way)? I give them everything they need to pass, they put up a wall and don't want to learn... and somehow that's the teacher's fault & I shouldn't get paid as much??? So ridiculous!!!!!!!

I'm thinking the same thing.

I wonder too. In middle school, all our kids are tested in math and reading every year (though I believe the 8th grade tests matter the most with our school status, or they used to). I don't want to take anything away from the people who teach other subjects, but we are the ones who have to maintain the portfoliods, and plan/execute all these interventions, which is fine, but I don't think it's fair that the decision could be made to give us less.

I also hate to say it, but I expect to see a resurgence in cheating too.
