When you make cookies (and no, it's not for recipes!)
do you prefer shortening or butter?
Please don't move to recipes. I'm not asking for a recipe, not asking for baking advice, just curious what people prefer.

Depends on the cookie I make. More often than not, I use butter. Sometimes I will use margarine.

Funny you should ask..I made some cookies today and used margarine because it's what I had and they are yummy...butter, when I have it, I'll use also..

shortening. I find that butter burns whenever I use it in recipes, whereas if I use shortening, they tend to not burn and will be nice and soft.

I realized that it was b/c of my oven, it works *too* well. I usually cut down the baking time in 1/2, or almost 1/2 and they come out perfect!

I've only ever used butter, but I might try shortening next time just to compare!

Butter - shortening freaks me out for some reason - I think it's the texture

It definitely depends on the type of cookie I am making.

Re: When you make cookies (and no, it's not for recipes!)
butter..... shortening and margarine are all transfats..... mega-bad healthwise.... even worse than butter-laden cookies
also, butter tastes better IMO......

I had an oven that had 2 temps, 'on' and 'off' in my first apartment. I bought a $5 oven thermometer and discovered 'on' is really almost 500 degrees
Becuase of that early experience, I always keep an oven thermometer on the top rack to guage the true temp. Also, I always use cookie insurance (aka parchment paper) Nothing scorches when baked on parchment
