Re: Yankees make Torre offer but he turns it down!

I had read that he wouldn't take a 1 year offer. Why go through this all again in a year. Good for him holding his ground.

Re: Yankees make Torre offer but he turns it down!

I was just looking for this post on NFR.

Anyway there is a ton of speculation on who will stay and who will go. I think it depends on who the next manager will be. I think it will be Mattingly, although Girardi is up there too. George loves mattingly, he was brought in and lured out of retirement to become the next mgr. The players also like him. In addition to that mgmt did a lot by offering Torre a new contract (I am not convinced that they did it knowing he would decline a 1 yr offer) and made the decision his to leave. That said I don't know that Posada and Rivera will actually leave. Posada wants to finish his career as a Yankee, he is pinstripes through and through.

et - to clarify my statement

Mattingly doesn't want it, he said he's not ready for it. But I'm sure Steinbrenner can convince him --> $$$$$.

I wonder where Joe will go now, or if he'll just retire.

I don't think we've heard the last of this with Torre.

Re: Yankees make Torre offer but he turns it down!

Posada will always be a Yankee.

Rivera already hinted if Torre was gone, so was he (now that Torre left on his own and was not fired, let's see what he meant)

A-Rod will go to the highest bidder. I don't think he has a loyalty to any team or manager, just the $$.

It is very sad to see Torre go. I will really miss him. I hope he writes a good book. I would love to read all about his Yankee era and get the inside scoop. (I doubt he will do that though, he has too much class )

Re: Yankees make Torre offer but he turns it down!

I'm a die hard Mets fan, but I have to say that I have a lot of respect for Joe Torre. He is truly a class act and a gentleman.

What the Yankees did to him was classless and disgusting. A man who took this team to the playoffs 12 years in a row with 4 championships didn't deserve the treatment he received. If Joe Torre was responsible for the team not getting a championship in 7 years, Brian Cashman is also responsible. Cashman signs Roger Clemens who is over 40 to a deal for 25 million and he didn't do squat besides taking King George's money.

Posada & Rivera are class acts too. Whatever they do, I wish them luck.

A-rod on the other hand I could care less. I don't want him as a Met. If he couldn't cut it in the post season with the Yankees, what makes you think he can do it with the Mets. A-rod is going to have another mouth to feed soon, so he'll sign whoever will give him the most money. I've always said that when Roger Clemens "retired" and came back, I called him a whore. He would go to any team that would give him the most money. Well I think he has competition on the corner with Arod.

What really surprised me during the past 2 weeks of Joe Torre hanging in the breeze by upper management was Derek Jeter. The captain of the team couldn't voice any opinion for the man that he called "Mr. Torre". During post game interviews he always give safe and clique comments, but when it came to the manager he was so close to, nothing but silence.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I agree. We'll wait to see what Jeter says. I wouldn't have taken the offer either. He is a hall of fame manager. Those don't grow on trees.

I think Joe will end up managing somewhere else. Maybe in 2009.

I totally agree with you. You took the words right out of my mouth and i'm a die hard Mets fan too.

I'm not a Joe Torre fan because to me he has no personality but the man is a class act and I have a lot of respect for him because of that.

What they did to him was disgusting. IMHO they made him that offer knowing he would refuse it. Shame on the Yankees Ownership for treating a hall of fame manager like that. What they did was in bad taste.

Kudos to Joe for telling them, especially Mr. Greedy and I'm never satisfied Georgie boy to shove it!

Re: Yankees make Torre offer but he turns it down!

I think Cashman should be gone as well. He does the hiring. So if the players don't perform. Who's fault is it?
