INSANE ESTIMATE
I had someone over the other day to give me an estimate for base moldings in 3 rooms and crown in two, with a chair rail and box moldings in the dining room which is not that big.....and then to paint the 3 rooms......he just called me and gave me an estimate for $8000.......I almost dropped dead. I think that's an insane price.....We've already had some painters over to give estimates for the 3 rooms and they wanted anywhere from 1300 to 1500........so how could it be so much......I think this guy was nuts. Now I'm just going to go to the store and buy all my moldings myself and then hire a handyman to put them up.....

That's what we did for our NY house. That's the best way to go!

That's carzy! Did you tell him he was nuts! Sometimes contractors highball estimates if they don't want the job. Maybe it wasn't a big enough job for him. Anyway, thats crazy!

was he charging for material also? if so then the prices is about normal that work is not easy, you will see bc they have to cut and put up, seam and cork and fill the nail holes and paint..
say Labor is 60 per hr.. that is an average amt..

Re: INSANE ESTIMATE
Don't just go with any handyman - seriously!! Putting up moulding properly takes a skilled craftsman!
We're having a carpenter do base moulding in our entire house (save for the basement and 1 of 4 bedrooms). He's also putting up crown moulding for the entire first floor and master bedroom. Our quote, including the moulding and installation was less than half what you were quoted (and I'm sure ours is a lot more work).
FM me if you want his contact info. He's rather skilled and reliable. I don't know if he paints, but I know a GREAT painter if he doesn't.

Re: INSANE ESTIMATE
shoot, rent a miter saw from home depot and do it yourself! Even 1350 is outrageous..... All you need are accurate angled cuts.... it will likely cost you under 800 for supplies and rental fees, and take a day.....

I disagree. I had my entire house painted (Every room) and am having base molding put in just about every room PLUS crown molding in the entire first floor and master bedroom -- all total cost less than that estimate WITH supplies included.

O.K. I feel 8K is high. You should ask around. Word of mouth is the best advertising there is.

I think you mean CAULK not cork.
to the OP-that estimate sounds very high, but the lowest price in town usually isn't the best either. Its hard to make good choices when you get estimates that are so spread out.

Re: INSANE ESTIMATE
My husband (who is an electrician, not a carpenter) put up crown molding in our kitchen and when it came to the corners, it was really tough. Our house is also old, so maybe it's b/c everything isn't super straight, but in the end, if we had the $, we'd have hired someone who does this professionally. So in my experience it's not as easy as it looks, and if you want it to look really good, it's not something to take on yourself. I can show you pics of my kitchen so you can see what I mean.

I agree. Crown Moulding is very difficult to put up and it's a skill that a lot of carpetners don't have. I think the estimate is high but not totally unreasonable.

Re: INSANE ESTIMATE
I don't know about the estimate but if you have one thats way out of whack its probably them not wanting the job.
thats what happened with our heating system. a guy quoted 5K over what all the 3 others had quoted so we knew he didnt want the job.

Re: INSANE ESTIMATE
I would just make sure whoever you hire knows how to install crown. We had a the guy who did our bathroom ruin a few hundred dollars worth of crown moulding by making the wrong cuts. In the end he blamed it on the house being old and not level. I had someone elese come in and do it no problem in 30 minutes because he knew what he was doing!

Re: INSANE ESTIMATE
How big are the rooms ? Are the ceilings very high? is there 'odd' architecture? Did you pick out very thick and/or detailed molding? etc. ....
I personally couldn't bring myself to spend that kind of money on a painter and such .........but it doesn't sound TOTALLY unreasonable. -
