Why would my stringbeans go on fire in the microwave?
So I apparently can't even heat a stringbean up without burning down the house I put leftover steamed stringbeans on a paper plate and they sparked. I then put them in a glass bowl and they sparked and went up in flame.
Is my microwave bad? I tried heating up pasta - no sparks or flames but a little smoky.

The paper plate wasn't in the microwave was it? Paper isn't supposed to go in there...
But since you said when the pasta went in, it got smoky, I would stick to the safe side and get it checked or get a new one.

Re: Why would my stringbeans go on fire in the microwave?
all i can suggest is that maybe you needed a little water. I was making stovetop in the micro once got distracted and forgot to put in the water....I had to throw out the micro after that as the tupperwear burned up and there was plastic fumes everywhere (this story was meant to make you feel better)

I think it must be the microwave. I heat up food on paper plates all the time without any problems.

you can put paper plates in there, you just cant put metal in there. and you can't put paper in the oven.

Re: Why would my stringbeans go on fire in the microwave?
I know there has to be a certain amount of moisture when you run a microwave. Beans are fairly dry... but I never thought they were dry enough to catch fire
something is not right... maybe the microwave.

Re: Why would my stringbeans go on fire in the microwave?
I saw this online: The minerals in string beans, carrots, peppers, and some other dense vegetables can cause sparks

Found this online:
you've wondered why your green beans cause sparks to fly when you microwave them, blame it on their density.
According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, dense vegetables such as green beans, carrots, and green peppers have higher amounts of minerals than other food items. The minerals act like tiny pieces of metal and can create arcing effects in a microwave.
While this doesn't harm your veggies, it may prevent them from heating thoroughly.
Please note that you should never deliberately microwave anything metal, unless it is microwave approved. - (HealthDayNews)

Re: Why would my stringbeans go on fire in the microwave?
Recycled paper plates have metal in them and can't go in the microwave. We learned this the same way as you.
