need advice....
is it REALLY hard to get an elementary teaching positon on LI? I am unsure of what to do....i can finish my teaching degree in 2 more semesters...however i was thinking of switching majors since the chances of a job are so slim. Im so confused. Stonybrook offers a one yr acc program for the major i would be switching to but i would have to finsih teaching in order to quailfy for the program.Im thinking now though that maybe i shouldnt waste all that time student teaching just to switch majors but on the other hand im this close...please any advice is welcome

Re: need advice....
Do not give up if you really want it. Is it hard? Yes. Is it impossible? NO WAY!!
Listen, if worse comes to worse, you can start the accounting program while subbing. If you do not have a job teaching when you are done with the accounting program, then you can switch careers.
Teaching is the best thing I have ever done. Don't give up because it is going to be difficult. Forge ahead!!

Re: need advice....
It IS very difficult to get a teaching job on LI. However if it is what you want then you should go for it. You should be prepared to pay your dues though and plan on subbing or being a leave replacement before you get a permenant job. Also there is always the city and private schools. Hopefully you could be one of the lucky ones that gets a job right out of student teaching! Good Luck!

Re: need advice....
if it's what you want, go for it! i tihnk it's silly to change, just because you think you might NOT get a job. yes, you may have to sub or do a leave replacement, but that's very common. Also, you may very well get a job. i didn't sub, have a leave replacement or get a job where i student taught and got a job (THANK GOD!) in a great school in the city and after one year in the city, got a job on LI.
Also, the city ALWAYS needs teachers, so that's always an option. i tihnk the people that cannot find a job are the ones that refuse to look outside a small geogrraphic area or won't go into the city. also, having a dual certification helps too...perhaps you could add a special ed. or literacy certification? i have dual certifaction and not ONE interview i got was for regular ed. they were all special ed. jobs. i had 3 interviews for special ed. jobs on LI and got one of those.
GOOD LUCK!
