may not be moving after all...
We are up here in New Hampshire right now. We've been up here since the weekend looking for apartments. There is NOTHING. We've exhausted all efforts. We've been to all the realtors, looked in the newspapers, went to the supermarket and looked at the board, just nothing we can afford on my low paying salary...Or they are so old and dirty and moldy we could hardly stand being in there for 5 minutes. There was also one on top of a mountain we almost slid down! Is this a sign we shouldn't move? I am so upset about giving up this job because I know I will never get one on Long Island... Hugs, words of advice?

Well don't say you will never get one on LI. But if your gut is telling you this isn't for you then don't do it. I am so sorry about your weekend

Re: may not be moving after all...
Don't give up yet! Have you tried neighboring towns that are further away? You may be commuting a little further than you'd like, but it won't necessarily be permanent - maybe you can get a 6 month lease or go month to month, just until something closer/nicer is available.
Also, keep in mind that moldy is bad, but dirty can be cleaned.
And what about DH, will he be finding a job up there after you move? Can you maybe find a place that's a little more than you can afford on your salary, but will become affordable shortly when he has income as well?
I also agree with the poster than said to ask at the school - if they want you to work there, they may want to help you find a place to live. The worst they can say is, "Sorry, we can't help you," and then you're no worse off than you already are.
Good luck! Sorry to hear it hasn't been easier...

Re: may not be moving after all...
I'm not sure of the background, but are you considering the job in NH because teaching jobs are scarce on LI or do you want to move to NH for other reasons?
If it is the former reason, I would not move to NH just to land a teaching job. The way potential teachers are scared into thinking that there will never be a job opening for them and that they are lucky to have work really upsets me! I think that if you want to work on LI, you should keep looking! Work in the in the city for a while if you have to, but don't move to another state to be a teacher!
If you have your heart set on NH for other reasons, try looking on craigslist for some apts.
Good luck!

Re: may not be moving after all...
Well, we are back in New York. We did look in neighboring towns, and nothing. The salary was just not enough to support us at all.
And yes, I do think I was going just for the teaching job. In reality, my DH has a great job here, I just wish I did too.

I would stay here then...I think that was a sign not to go! I really believe something will come your way Have you tried like Huntington Learning Center or Sylvan they are always looking for directors

Thanks Kathleen. I am a big believer in signs, and I think we had one. I actually worked for Sylvan. The pay was terrible-10 an hour!

Re: may not be moving after all...
I think if you are just patient, you will find a job. Are you an elementary or middle/high school teacher?
