I think I might have done something today that actually hit home...

This week, some of the kids in school have formed a Kick the Drive committee to promote safe driving. (As a Long Island high school, we've had more than our fair share of fatal accidents -- in the eight years I've been there, eight kids have died.) Well, since I'm an English teacher, I've written (for myself) whenever one of these things happens. One of these accidents in particular hit me very hard since one of the kids killed was one of my 10th graders that year. So today, I decided to give my juniors some of my pieces to read, hoping to really show them how awful it truly is. I just have to say... wow. I've never seen them so quiet and so sad. I hope it makes at least one of them slow down.

Sometimes, and quite often teenagers never think that things like this can happen to them, maybe since really did hit home they felt it and possibly made a difference

kudos to you for doing something positive and possibly changing how they think about driving
