Renewing passport

My passport expires in April 2009. Next year I am going to renew it, b/c I hear they are a bit backed up. I have to do it overseas. Has anyone renewed their passport overseas? Do they give your old passport back? I want to keep it- there are so many stamps and stickers.

I didnt renew overseas but I did get my old passport back. They punc holes in it so it cant be used again but you get it back

I would imagine you could renew it via mail. or perhaps if you're near an American embassy/consulate, they would do it for you on site. I renewed my passport once via mail and never got it back, but the time before that, it was returned to me. just depends... but with all the security now, i wouldn't be suprised if you didn't get it back,

I think they have to give it back to you (that's what the mailman at the post office told me, anyway)- it's considered a legal document (just like your birth certificate and marriage license) so they have to return it to you. DH and I both got ours back (they punches holes in it, as others have said).
