Anyone familiar with Charlotte NC?
Hi, I'm wondering if anyone who is familiar with Charlotte and surrounding suburbs could tell me what are the best neighborhoods/suburbs to commute to the "city center" from? This is for me but not for the present time; we may move down there in the future. I've been looking on realtor.com and found a lot of nice affordable homes and they're all about 20 miles outside of Charlotte but I'd want to (if availalbe) commute by bus or train and not car. I have no idea if that's an option down there! Thanks!

Union County is a great area with great schools. Check out Waxhaw, Indian Trail and Matthews. You can look on carolinahome.com and select Union County.

I concur, they are just starting to put in a light rail system, but it doesn't really extend out to the burbs. There is a pretty good bus system, but it doesn't extend out too far either.
There are great parts of Charlotte but the school system is spotty within Mecklenberg County (which is where Charlotte is). Some schools are great (for example, Ballentyne area-but homes in that area can be very expensive).
When we moved we wanted a good school system and a reasonable commute (less than 30 minutes). We got that by going north-to Cabarrus County. Union County is south and would be a longer commute to get into the city, if you are working in what is referred to as "uptown".
Good luck in your search.

Re: Anyone familiar with Charlotte NC?
Hi, I'm not a regular poster but I have family that moved to Charlotte about 2 1/2 years ago. They love it down there. My mother lives in Matthews and my sister lives in Mecklenburg county. My sister commutes by bus to work and she hasn't had any problems. It takes her about half hour to 45 minutes to get to work. My fiancee and I are thinking about moving down there eventually but he's a teacher and the pay isn't as competitive as it is here in NY. Maybe in a couple of years it will get better for teachers. Good luck!

Re: Anyone familiar with Charlotte NC?
thanks everyone. I am in the library/information industry working in a law firm but doing mostly financial information retrieval so I would love to get a job at BoA or Wachovia or one of the other big banks down there (although I think those are the 2 big ones). Or even a decent sized law firm. So I'd def. want to work in the city. This isn't going to happen for a few years for sure (probaby 5+) but I just like to keep my eyes on the market and what school systems are good, etc. thanks again!
