Traveling Anxiety?
Does anyone else get a little anxious about flying/traveling abroad?
I've never been abroad, and this is part of the reason why. DH And I planned a trip to Italy in Feb., and I am already starting to get anxious about it.
What can I do to alleviate some of this travel fear?

I suffer anxiety in general and I have developed a fear of flying in recent years. So our trip to Italy last year made me soooooo nervous. For the flying there wasn't much I could do. I worried - a lot! Whenever I got really worried I tried to focus on everything that excited me about the trip. I also got myself some antianxiety pills from my doc for the flight. I also took one the night before so I could sleep and not worry all night.
As for traveling abroad, I hadn't done much of that either. Be comforted by the fact that people speak english everywhere in Italy, expecially the big cities.
We had a wonderful trip and of course when if was over I kicked myself for worrying. Now I can't wait to go back.

Thank you so much for this response!!
Was it easy to get the anxiety prescription? Should I just tell my Dr. that I am flying abroad and just need a couple for the flight?
I will definitely focus on the positive, exciting parts of the trip!!

I also used to get anxious while flying. I'm very lucky because DH is a pilot and can explain a lot of things that freak me out (noises, turbulence, ext..) There is a a great book called Ask A Pilot that is a really good read and can maybe help unravel some of the mystery (not understanding makes things scarier as I'm sure you know!).

I think it depends on the doc. I've heard some rather prescribe a sleeping pill. Otherwise they may give you a prescription for a low dose of something like xanax. Give him/her a call and see. A lot of people have told me they just take Tylenol-PM - I didn't just because I didn't want to risk it not working! (I've never used it) Good luck.

I get like this every single time I go abroad. I've been to Europe a few times and I'm a wreck thinking about the flight at least a month before. Once I'm there though, I'm fine—and the stress is worth it because I LOVE traveling.
Last year before a big trip I called my doctor and asked for a prescription to help with my nerves. He called in a RX for Xanax. I ended up not even using it, but it was no problem getting it.
