How to tell my admins...UPDATED

Ok, I need some help with this one.

DH and I have learned that it's going to take some "extraordinary measures" for us to get pregnant. At the very least, it's going to take meds, LOTS of monitoring, and lots of time that I never seem to have in my schedule.

I could wait until the summer to get this ball rolling, but we've already put off TTC for tons of other reasons, and now it's time to put US first.

So, here's my dilemma: My RE's office has their last appointment at 2:30, and it's about 1/2 hour away from my school. We're not allowed to leave until 2:30. Due to the fact that I'll need to go in on very specific days for sonos, bloodwork, etc., I'll need a little "leniency" in my schedule.

My principal is male, but one of the asst. principals is female. I'm thinking of telling her the WHOLE story, and hoping she'll be sympathetic.

How would you all handle this?

******UPDATE********

I spoke to my AP today (female) about what's been going on. She was VERY supportive, and said that if I can give her just a day's notice (which I can definitely do), she'll make sure she sends in an assistant to cover my class.

I'm so relieved that she was that supportive. I sometimes get mixed messages from her, but--I also forget that she has a little girl, so I think she gets it.

She even said for me to come in if I ever need to have a good cry and an ear to listen! Chat Icon

Re: How to tell my admins...

i would speak to the adminstration as you have planned. however, you may need to be prepared to use sick time for the appointments that you'll need to leave school for. I am sure they will sympathetic, but i would imagine that they will have to be consistent with everyone in terms of time off, sick leave, personal leave, etc.

ALso, perhaps if this is something that may go on into the next school year, perhaps they would arrange your schedule so that you have a prep. last period so that you are not missing out on any actual teaching time.

GOOD LUCK!

Re: How to tell my admins...

Could you possibly sit them both down and discuss it...(Sometimes men are more understanding than women.)
I have a male principal and he is VERY accommodating. He lets me leave early on the days I have to go to school...last Semester it was on the day of our "mandatory" staff meetings, and he let me miss that. And He also allows my co teacher to come in late so she may drop her daughter off at daycare.

So maybe if you all sit down and discuss it, you can all figure out a schedule that fits best?

Re: How to tell my admins...

talk to your union rep first.

see what she says and go from there. most principals are lenient when it comes to doctor's appointments but what you will probably have to do once in a while is make a morning appointment and take a half day so you would just be in in the afternoon. or get an afternoon appointment and take a half day in the afternoon.

the principal would probably let you leave early once in a while, but not all the time.

good luck.

Unfortunately, we are not unionized here in NC (we're working on it, the other NY teachers and I!). My principal is really good about letting us leave no earlier than 1:00 as long as he has about a week's notice--but I also don't want to take advantage.

Here's where I stand with my job: It's my first year here, but they are SUPER impressed with me. All I have heard is positives, and they know that I'm all about the kids. I wonder if that will work in my favor at all...

Sticky situation!

Re: How to tell my admins...

I'm going through the exact same thing right now. I decided it was best to be straight foward and tell them everything that was going on. Both my AP and principal are males but I felt more comfortable talkning to my AP and allowed him to relay my situation. So far they have been very accomadating. They have changed my preps around on the days I need it and found people to cover me for the last period or two of the day. It's hard for me because my doc is about an hour from where I work and the last appointment is at 2:30 (Schools out at 3:30)
GL! I'm sure it will work out. Remember, your life is more important than your job!

Someone already suggested that. Unfortunately, I am in NC and we are not unionized. Both a good thing and a bad thing, because technically, there are no rules saying that this can't be feasible.

Re: How to tell my admins...

Since you don't have a Union Rep are there any more senior teachers that you could talk to first for advice???

That's a good idea. The other thing that is tricky is that this is a totally new administration this year. So, even with another teacher's advice, none of us really know how this team will be with stuff like this...

...I think I'm just gonna bite the bullet and be honest about it!

Re: How to tell my admins...

Would you be teaching during the time you need off?

Honestly, as a first year teacher - I don't know if I would be comfortable asking for accomodations like that.

If I were teaching in NY, I would feel the exact same way. However, since I'm in NC where good teachers are such a rarity (or so I'm told), I'm a little more confident in asking. Also, because I know my principal is VERY family-oriented, I think he'd be sympathetic.

I'm more concerned about HOW to bring it up than anything else, if that makes sense.

Re: How to tell my admins...

How often will it be?

Maybe have a suggestion /a back up plan...

For example, I know if I need to leave early for whatever reason and I ask my principal, he will say yes, but he is much kinder with the "yes" if I have a plan- like," ________ is going to cover my homeroom for me. "

first year or 20 years in, it shouldn't matter. that's why you need to be completely upfront with the principal. if he knows what's going on, he'll be more understanding.

I see what you are saying, but as a first year teacher, I wouldn't have had the nerve to ask for accomodations, especially if it was during time I was supposed to be teaching. Heck, I probably would have found a new RE Chat Icon . Now, I feel like I have a proven track record, and if I need something here or there, it's less of a big deal.

Totally get where you're coming from--but the RE that I'm seeing is one of the top specialists in PCOS (what I was recently diagnosed as) in the nation. Because DH and I want children so badly, I wanted to go with the best. I've spent so long putting off having kids for every reason in the book (not enough money, finishing my Masters, buying a house, moving, etc. etc. etc.), and I just feel like it's time I put us first for a change...KWIM?

Unfortunately, with my schedule, I don't have any flexibility to switch things around, not teach during that time, etc. (Heck, I get a 35 min. prep and a 25 minute lunch every day! Barely enough time to pee and run stuff off!)

I think I'll email my asst. principal and ask to meet with her on Friday. I'm going to be completely open and honest about what's going on, and maybe that will work to my advantage.

Fortunately, since I'm not in the teaching "rat race" of NY anymore, I feel that I can feasibly let them know what's going on without danger of being replaced.

I'll let you all know how it goes!

SUPER easy. Almost too easy. I work for the highest performing school district in NC, and I managed to get my job by flying down and having a friendly chat with the principal. She hired me on the spot.

Where are you looking to move?
