Teaching and IVF
HAs anyone been through this as a teacher?
Im looking to be aware of any possible problems before I start. I **think** I should be ok with the early am appointments as I have to be at work by 8....but I was wondering if I am naive in thinking I will only need to take off for the retrieval and transfer?

I am not a teacher, but I think unless your clinic is close to your job, it will be difficult for you to be there by 8:00.

They open at 630 and said they are very understanding of teachers having to get to work..
The melville office is probably 15/20 minutes from my job.

Re: Teaching and IVF
I was late a few times during my IVF cycle. However, I was very open and honest with my principal and she totally understood and didn't dock me once during both cycles!!!!!!!!

Re: Teaching and IVF
I am a teacher and started IVF this cycle. the 7 previous cycles i have been doing iui's so i have had to get to the office for bw before 6:30 and hope that they run on time so i can get to work by 7:30. I did confide in my principal since I knew I was going to be missing more days than usually and I also told a really close friend so they could help me out in the morning just in case i was late. I try to schedule any other appointments that I might need to go in for besides bw and sono's during my break or after school.
I am not sure where you work or how far it is from your RE, but when I haven't been late to work yet and I have to be there 1/2 hr b4 you.
As far as taking off other days, I think you can schedule other appointments at other times like after school. I am getting a water sono done on my prep and lunch and one other period that I got coverage for.

Re: Teaching and IVF
I am a teacher and when I went through the whole process I went to my supervisor and let her know, and at the time I needed coverage for my first 2 classes. I have to be in at 7am, and my office opened then. I did take off for transfers and of course retrievels. The following year I asked to have the first 2 periods off so I wouldnt need coverage and they did it for me. If you think you will run into latenesses due to time issues, i would let your supervisor or principal know ahead of time. You can do it as a teacher

Re: Teaching and IVF
Jen, you sound just like me. I've been driving DH nuts trying to anticipate problems that might happen. I am a big worry wart. At least one teacher in my school went throuh this and she just told administration the truth. It sounds like your dr. is close enough so you should be fine. I will have a huge problem when I start. My doctor is 1 hour away from where my school is! I have a new principal this year and I am so worried about lateness and absences. As it is my next test is scheduled for the 8th - 1st day of ELA exam. Can you imagine I actually almost changed my appointment because of that?! I just keep in mind that my life comes before my job.

OMG.. I am STRESSING about the ELA thing. I told the science teacher on my team how stressed I was bc I think I may need to be out on one of the days we are grading and she absolutely said that I have to do what I need to do and STOP worrying about work stuff. I also figured out that if I get pregnant with this first IVF I will be out on Maternity leave for the ELA next year and am a little stressed about that.

Like the above poster said, you have to stop worrying about everything else. Right now this is about you and you have to focus on you. I'm sure work is very important to you, as it should be, but it is still going to be there years from now if you want it. Right now you need to be selfish and worry about yourself, and not the ELA! when I told my principal he told me he is a family guy and family comes first so do what I need to do. and I am sure when you get pregnant the ELA is going to be the last thing you are thinking about! good luck and really use this time for yourself.

Re: Teaching and IVF
I am a teacher. For my 8 am appointments I have to take 1/2 a sick day in the morning. For my 7 a.m aapointment, my principal is letting me just have someone cover for me until I get there. It depends on how your principal is, If you get a nice one they might just let you come in late and have someone cover for you. BOTB
