i suppose it can't hurt to ask, but to be honest anywhere i have ever worked wouldn't entertain a request for a raise before the first yearly review. You've only been there 6 months.

As for the health insurance, since you didn't negotiate at the time of the contract, it would be nice of them to give you more, but they certainly wouldn't be required or expected to.

one note: never ever say you work hard, and they don't in a raise discussion. point only to numbers, not to what everyone else is doing. they may also not work as hard because they've been there long enough to know that the boss does not reward employees for hard work...just something to think about.

doesn't hurt to ask but you have to present how you have helped the company and how you will continue to do so.

Don't bad mouth your co-workers at all. It won't look good for you.

thank you for the advice. And I would Never compare my work to them in asking for the raise, I just thought it was a side note to the info I was giving so that you could judge correctly.. the reason i asked, is b/c i am only their 6 months, and normally you work for a year before even being considered, and I didn't want to step on toes, but I feel like that was part of my salary offer from day 1. And should I have not needed it, I believe the salary offer would have been higher. If that makes sense.

To be honest, the only way I've actually ever gotten raises, was if I was promoted to another position in another department within the company, or if I left altogether and went somewhere new.

IMO, it's really hard to get an increase with a current position not more than a slight percentage which usually only averages out to like maybe $50.00 per paycheck after taxes.

I think a lot of employers operate this way........they know if they hired you at X amount of $$$ per year, that it's unrealistic to increase your salary a great deal higher than that.

I've also known many employers to use the "and other tasks to be assigned" jargon to get out of having to pay someone for doing multiple extra tasks/positions.

I could be a bit jaded though because my field traditionally is not known for giving raises and paying a modest salary at best.

It could just be my field though. Social work doesn't involve many raises LOL.

I think that's another reason SWers change jobs every couple years or so!!!

I wouldn't ask for a raise. In most companies if you don't use the health insurance you don't get anything additional to make up for it, and you've only been there for 6 months. I don't really think not using your benefits is grounds to ask for a raise. As for your accomplishments, those will be great things to bring up when you have your next review.
