every year i tend to have at least one chinese student. their parents come in and do a whole presentation for the class.
if i didn't have those students, i wouldn't mention it, just like we can't mention christmas, hanukah, etc. it's so so sad, but that's the way it is where i work. the teachers can't mention anything cultural or religious.

I have celebrated Chinese New Year before and I have done any variations of:
*each child gets a red envelope with the good luck coins *we have traditional Chinese snacks *we each make wishes for the New Year on red slips of paper and decorate them and make a "Gung Hay Fat Choy" bulletin board *read some Chinese New Year books, including Sam and the Lucky Money

i am going to start in the year of the boar and jackie robinson by bette bao lord next week and try to have it finished by 2/7.
i teach 4th. we are also doing a fireworks art project with glitter glue, black construction paper, and a straw to blow the glue around. additionally, we are reading some informational texts about the culture
